THE HERCULES BEETLE

When your non-bug loving sister starts collecting and saving cool dead bugs for you, you know she loves you! Would YOU pick this guy up?

My sister found this deceased male Hercules Beetle outside a shopping center. Sadly, it and many other bugs had been poisoned by their regularly scheduled pest control service’s bug spray.
— When you spray poison to kill the bad bugs, you also kill the good bugs. ☹️

THE HERCULES BEETLE is the largest beetle found in North America. It is one of the strongest creatures compared to his size; he is able to lift 850 times its own body weight. As you can see, this male is a good representative of his name’s sake, Hercules from Roman mythology, that Hercules was also known for his remarkable strength. 💪🏼

Male beetles can be identified by the long horn on the top with a smaller horn on the head. They will use these horns to fight off other males.

Females lack these cool looking horns but otherwise may be close to the same size and weight as their male counterparts.

We will preserve this gorgeous guy so we can add him to our collection of preserved insects we bring to show students during our traveling field trips! Feel free to schedule yours with us!

Fall Pollen coming in!

09/28/2026

I’m always excited to see these in the fall! Snow on the Prairie and Snow on the Mountain plants provide late season nectar and pollen sources for our Central Texas bees and pollinators. It’s is important to note that honey made solely from these plants may cause irritation to the throat.

Good thing we have lots of fall plants blooming (thanks to the Lord for this year’s rain!). Most of the fall honey will be left on our hives as they will need it for winter months!

These cluster white flowers with their beautiful green leafage also make a beautiful addition to our fall bouquets!

Have you spotted either of the Snows growing in your area this year?

Well done, gals! 🙌 For those of you wondering, this is a frame of mostly capped brood (pupae stage) surrounded by some gorgeous honey!

Capped brood represents day 9 through 21 of the worker bee’s brood lifecycle.

On day nine, worker bees seal the cells containing mature larvae with a porous, breathable beeswax capping that allows oxygen to pass through while also offering protection to the delicate pupa confined in each cell.
The capped pupa will undergo a complete transformation as it spins a cocoon around itself to metamorphosis into an adult worker bee, she will chew herself out of her cell on day 21!
Once she emerges, she gets right to work serving the hive!

If you find bees amazing and wanna learn more, reach out to schedule an interactive bee presentation, private hive tour or a lesson! We love teaching about bees!

Take a second to admire this stunning fall native wildflower known as: Eryngo!

Its flashy purple pineapple looking top is beautiful addition to any fall bouquet!

Known as a beneficial fall pollen and nectar source for bees and other pollinators, it
thrives in our seasonal dry seasons - and crazy enough, it is in the carrot 🥕 family!

Watch out if you decide to pick it, it’s a bit prickly! Picking it or collecting seeds may require gloves- or really thick skin 🤣!

This is a valuable addition to any native garden bed; it’s deer and drought resistant and it even has been used medicinally for fighting fevers, ear aches and tummy aches! At one time, people enjoyed its roots; they supposedly taste sweet and nutty like parsnips.

Have you ever tried them?

I can’t help but admire this plant and look forward to its appearance every fall! 😍

Honeybees are super efficient and will reuse their wax hexagon cells. However, it is thought that they rarely collect wax to bring back to the hive.

Because of this, I was so surprised to find several honeybees collecting bits of wax from some discarded strips of beeswax.

If you watch this worker bee closely, you’ll see her actively gathering and then passing the bits of wax into her pollen basket (AKA corbicula: a concave cavity on her hind leg). She simultaneously packs it with her middle leg as she continues gathering more wax!

Worker honeybees usually use this specialized basket for storing grains of pollen, they can carry up 160,000 grains of pollen in each basket; this can easily be the same as half her body weight!

Happy to donate this potted plant to these gals!
