What’s the HydroPro team up to today?

For Central Texas Account Manager Vincent Molina, it’s sales calls, a parts delivery to Kingsland WSC, and apparently finding the best possible spot for a photo. 😎

Your Next Emergency May Already Be Somewhere in Your System

A valve that has operated reliably for years fails to close during a main break. A small leak goes unnoticed until it becomes a major repair. A section of pipe that has never caused concern suddenly becomes the source of an unexpected outage.

These situations are difficult to predict because the assets involved often aren't the ones demanding attention. They are the ones that have been quietly doing their jobs for years.

That is one of the challenges utilities across the country face every day. With thousands of assets, limited budgets, aging infrastructure, and competing priorities, it is impossible to treat every potential problem as an emergency. And in many cases, there may be little indication that something is wrong until circumstances expose it.

The answer isn't to try to prevent every failure. It's to reduce the number of failures that come as a surprise.

Better asset records, maintenance histories, system monitoring, condition data, and accessible field information can help utilities identify where attention is needed before a small issue becomes a much larger one.

That is what being proactive really means. Not knowing exactly what will fail next, but having enough visibility into your system to make better decisions about what deserves attention today.
Infrastructure will fail. Unexpected problems will happen. That is a reality of operating a water system, not necessarily an indication that something has gone wrong with the way it is being managed.

Failures may be unavoidable. Being caught completely off guard doesn't have to be.

📓 THE UTILITY NOTEBOOK

The cheapest fix today isn't always the cheapest fix long-term.

Repeated repairs, truck rolls, staff time, and water loss can add up quickly.

Sometimes replacing the problem asset makes more sense than continuing to repair it.

It's worth looking at the total cost, not just today's invoice.

💥 UTILITY HERO SPOTLIGHT: Sarah Dains 💥

When a water main breaks in the middle of the night, crews need the right parts ready to go. That kind of preparedness starts long before the emergency.

Meet Sarah Dains, Purchasing Specialist at Sacramento Suburban Water District. With 14 years in the water industry, Sarah works behind the scenes to make sure her team has the materials, supplies, and equipment they need to keep water flowing.

Today, she oversees approximately $1 million in inventory, including 650+ types of parts and roughly 20,000 individual items. But for Sarah, it all comes back to supporting her team and being prepared for whatever comes next.

That preparation, teamwork, and commitment to keeping her utility ready for whatever comes next is what makes Sarah a Utility HERO.

Episode 5: What Makes a Utility HERO?

Converse’s story is not only about new meters.
It is about a utility willing to recognize that the old process was no longer enough.

Its leaders asked questions, learned from neighboring cities, involved their staff, and prepared for future growth.

That is what makes a Utility HERO.

Not having every answer.

Being willing to take the next responsible step for the people you serve.

At the end of his letter, Jonathan Smith wrote:
“Our community has come a long way.”

It certainly has.

And that progress belongs to the people who made it happen.

Episode 4: More Than Faster Meter Reading

Before the project, Converse collected one system-wide meter read per month.

Afterward, the city had access to hourly data.

A process that once required hundreds of field hours could now be completed indoors in roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

Staff gained access to leak, tamper, inactive-meter, and reverse-flow alerts. Customers could also monitor their own usage.

Jonathan Smith summed it up perfectly:
“This is a data management system, not just a meter reading system.”

The technology changed.

More importantly, the city gained better information to serve its community.

Final episode: What made Converse a HERO.

Episode 3: Turning “Could Be” Into Reality

Sales conversations are full of possibilities.

Project management is where those possibilities become real.

HydroPro Project Manager James Obermeyer describes it this way:
“During the sales process, we sell what could be. As PM, I get to make the ‘could be’ a reality.”

For Converse, that meant coordinating equipment, infrastructure, training, city staff, and a team of more than 20 installers.

The installation was completed in just eight weeks.

Not because one company showed up with all the answers, but because both teams worked together.

Next episode: What changed after installation.

Episode 2: They Did Their Homework

Converse did not rush into a decision.

City staff visited neighboring utilities, compared systems, interviewed providers, and asked about more than price.

They wanted quality equipment, installation, training, support, and a partner they could trust after the project was complete.

That careful process led them to HydroPro Solutions.
But choosing the system was only the first step.

The real test would be bringing nearly 8,000 meters onto a new network without losing sight of the people the system served.

Next episode: Turning the plan into reality.
