Last week, we wrapped The 2026 OPEN MINDS Executive Leadership Retreat, bringing together more than 300 health and human services executives in our hometown for three days focused on what it takes to lead through uncertainty and prepare organizations for what comes next.

We started our final day with Tad Gary, CEO of Mercy Care, and his keynote, Whole Person Care In Action: Mercy Care’s Blueprint For The Future Of Integrated Care. Throughout the day, financial leaders came together for the OPEN MINDS CFO Summit, sponsored by Netsmart, while attendees also had the opportunity to step outside the meeting rooms and experience the history of Gettysburg firsthand – touring Little Round Top, where Pickett’s Charge took place, and walking in the footsteps of women who served critical roles during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Monica E. Oss, CEO of OPEN MINDS Circle, brought the Retreat to a close with lessons from the week and a look at the leadership strategies executive teams will need to stay agile as the market continues to change.

But what well remember most are the conversations between sessions, the new connections, the ideas shared, and the incredible community of leaders who joined us in Gettysburg.

Yesterday, Anna Keith, Vice President, LTSS Product & Strategy at Centene, started off Day 2 of the Executive Leadership Retreat with a keynote discussion on the future of long-term services and supports.

During the Health & Human Services Workforce Best Practices Summit, sponsored by Qualifacts, we heard from leaders on how to tackle the challenges of increasing service demand and a shrinking workforce.

Attendees also had the chance to choose between two historic tours to learn from leaders of the past. Some went and toured the Eisenhower farm while others walked the same path that led to the President Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address in the National Cemetery.

Two knowledge partner sessions took place throughout the day - "AI & The 5-Year Plan: Building Productivity & Clinical Innovation Into Your Strategic Roadmap" sponsored by Core Solutions, Inc. and "Built To Scale, Not To Break: A Growing Population Health Organization’s Guide To People + Finance Infrastructure" sponsored by Alera Health.

Anonymous Health closed the afternoon with a cocktail hour with drinks, snacks, and music.

Then we ended the night with our networking reception at Beyond The Battle Museum with views of the battlefield at sunset.

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) have grown from 66 clinics to 539 nationwide, backed by nearly $3B in federal funding. Real results are following broader access for children and uninsured patients, more crisis services, and a shift toward value-based reimbursement. But scale doesn’t equal sustainability. When Volunteers of America Massachusetts-VOAMASS saw hoped-for grant funding fall through, they rebuilt around three principles:

1. Shared commitment to one mutual goal.
2. Shared expertise via joint sustainability dashboards
3. Shared accountability between Finance and Operations

VOAMASS COO Mindy Miller said, “Finance and Operations 1000% have to work together.” The result: a diversified funding model supporting 2,000+ consumers a year, and new mobile care teams reaching people in shelters, parks and homes.
