Providing all employees with a way to confidentially and safely share feedback is critical to any company's success, particularly when leaders want to ensure people from under-represented groups have a safe way to share their experiences.

I'm a huge fan of All Voice's mission and platform and loved being a guest on the first episode of their Reimagining Company Culture series.

Tune in to learn how to turn company feedback into actionable results as well as how to help managers give useful feedback to their direct reports that helps them grow. We also chat about something we don't talk enough about: the relationship between feedback, bias, and microaggressions.

In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we’re chatting with Tom Floyd, CEO and Founder of Flouracity. Tom is a learning and development professional with a track record of success as both a leader within tech companies including Facebook and Apple and as an entrepreneur running a private m...

Delighted to be a part of Evolv Technologies' Company Kickoff today, facilitating a conversation about how diversity influences who we are as well as how we connect, lead, and think at work.

For me growing up as a gay man I've had to learn how to quickly sense the feelings of those around me, particularly in situations where others' might feel uncomfortable or I might be in danger. My sexual orientation influenced my strengths of being both adaptable and empathic in a variety of situations at work, making me an agile leader who can pivot and adjust quickly - especially during times of change.

How does a dimension of your diversity influence how you lead at work?

How do I intervene without being a micromanager?

It's a question addressed superbly by an article in this month's Harvard Business Review:

* Time your help wisely.
* Clarify your role is to help.
* Align the rhythm of your involvement to people's needs.

Getting involved too soon is one of the challenges we hear most in coaching sessions with new managers and that "But I know how to fix this..." instinct can remain pervasive for the most experienced of managers as they continue to advance in their careers.

The best practice around timing - giving your team a chance to experience and work through the problem themselves before offering assistance - is a particular standout.

New research points to three strategies.

Many of us realize we need to spend more time connecting and listening to others, particularly when we're talking about stuff where we might not necessarily be on the same page.

Often in these moments, we forget the distinction between two very different things: acknowledging and agreeing. When we acknowledge the perspective of others, it doesn't necessarily mean we agree with them - however it does communicate "I hear you", which is where successful conversations begin.

So what can you do today to help the people around you feel more acknowledged and heard?

Start by surfacing what matters when you're responding to others. Try statements like "So the most important thing to you is..." or ask a question like "What matters here?"

Not only will you help others clarify what's important to them, you'll quickly distill insights that evolve your own perspective too.

Looking for ways to improve your listening skills? You can count on us for more tips like this in the future.

In the mean time what have you found works when you're helping others surface what really matters in conversations with them?

For anyone who missed Oji Life Lab's Diversity, Leadership & Emotions E12020 webinar a few weeks ago, you’ll hear Heidi Brooks (Yale), Luciana Duarte (HP Inc.), Janet Miller Evans (Entevos), and me (Flouracity) answer questions like:

* What does effective diversity, equity, and inclusion work look like in organizations?
* When we think about how we impact each other at work, how can we use our emotions as a force for good?
* When doing DEI work within organizations, what roles do emotional labor and emotional regulation play?
* What can we immediately start doing today?

…and more.

Over the next several months I’ll also share excerpts from this rich discussion relevant for companies looking for ways to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within their own four walls.

More than any other year in recent times, 2020 has certainly put our ability to manage our emotions to the ultimate test.

I’ve been a fan of Marc Brackett and Robin Stern’s work on emotional intelligence for many years now. I’m an even bigger fan of the company they cofounded, Oji, which has developed a mobile learning experience (the Emotion Life Lab) to help people develop new habits to regulate their emotions.

I’m excited to be a part of Oji’s next Emotional Intelligence webinar which focuses on the intersection of diversity, leadership, and emotions.

Join us this Thursday at 10am PT to attend and if you can’t watch live, no problem. All registrants receive a link to the recorded webinar so you can watch anytime.
