Sleep and the City was founded by Lauren after completing her Infant & Child Sleep Consulting course and helping numerous family members and friends with their baby, infant and toddler's sleep issues. She is trained in numerous child sleep training methods (Sears Attachment, Ferber, No-Cry, Ferber, Extinction, Happiest Baby, etc), cognitive behavioral sleep therapy for adults and views every client as an individual case. WHEN DO BABY NIGHT WAKINGS STOP: Most doctors will agree that babies over 6-months are able to connect their own sleep cycles, and even drop the majority (if not all!) of their night feeds. However, many babies continue to wake up frequently during the night.

❓Aren’t night wakings normal? One thing to understand is that humans by nature, no matter what age, wake briefly several times throughout the night. The issue isn’t the actual waking, but rather with a baby that is unable to put themselves (or self-soothe) back to sleep. Babies that aren’t able to do this will alert their parents by crying out, needing something from their parent in order to fall back asleep. In short: These babes likely have developed sleep crutch(es) over the past few weeks/months, thus aren’t able to self-soothe.

❓What’s a sleep crutch? Most common examples are feeding to sleep, rocking to sleep, or lying next to/on a parent in order to fall asleep, and stay asleep.

👉🏼But there is plenty you can do to help your baby:

✨Begin Eat-Play-Sleep routines, and have a schedule
✨Establish a consistent bedtime routine
✨Put your baby down still awake, in his/her own area
✨Talk w/your doctor about how many feeds baby does or doesn’t need at night after 6 months and adjust
✨Choose a gradual, supportive and flexible method to sleep training (the Wink-a-Sleep does this!)

Where are all my 9-15 month old babies?! SAVE this post now for later!

👉🏼Here’s a glance at your napping goals for this age:

💘Two naps per day, with at least one lasting at 90 minutes
💘3-3.5 hour wake windows; babies will sometimes be able to go a bit longer if already sleeping through the night
💘Naps should be completely independent from parent, in the same place where baby sleeps at night for the best results
💘Baby is able to self-soothe
💘Falling asleep for naps should take 5-20 minutes max

BABY SLEEP + FIREWORKS 💥 Tips today for helping your baby sleep through the 4th tonight!

🇺🇸 Make sure you SAVE this for tonight, or share with an anxious Mom friend!

❤️TIPS FOR THE 4th to help your baby sleep through fireworks late at night:

🤍 White Noise- if you don’t have a white noise machine, get one now. Muffle the sounds outside is key to keeping baby snoozing. Try two machines tonight, or turn the volume slightly up. A box fan works great too!

💙 Deep Sleep: Aim to have baby asleep BEFORE your neighborhood fireworks begin, timing it so baby is in a deep stage of sleep. Deep stages of sleep occur in between sleep cycles, which repeat every 1.5 hours (or every 3 for older kids).

❤️ Keep bedtime consistent as possible

🤍Don’t skip naps for social outings (can cause or INCREASE night wakings)

💙 Settle baby from side of crib if awaken by loud bangs

SLEEP PROPS: Also known as referred to as sleep “crutches” or “association”, is anything that a 3+ month old baby or toddler relies CONSTANTLY on in order to fall completely to sleep.

↪️Examples: Rocking, feeding, singing, bouncing and pacifiers are often referred to as sleep crutches if used repeatedly at night or as means to get a longer nap.

🗣️It’s important to note that the following things are super useful when it comes to successful baby sleep and not commonly crutches or props:

✨White noise
✨ Sleep sacks or swaddling
✨ Babywearing
✨ Sound machines
✨ Dark rooms for babies
✨ Nightlights for toddlers
✨ Dreamfeeds
