He never finished the eighth grade.

He got a college degree anyway. Sold to Amazon for 15 years. Played golf on Fridays and got a paycheck every two weeks — and walked away from all of it at 49 to take out an SBA loan on a roofing franchise he admits he never properly vetted.

Three years later: seven employees, 160+ five-star reviews, and a company that ran just fine while he spent four days in Idaho watching his daughter play golf.

John Malko of Mighty Dog Roofing sat down with us for two hours and didn't dodge a single question — including the ones about the nights he sat outside with a cigar wondering what he'd done.

Apparently I fall in a class of at least 288 golfers who looked at an Arizona summer forecast and said, “Yeah… let’s play 18.” Oh and tee off at 1PM! 🥜 ⛳ 🔥

Had an absolute blast Saturday at the Holmberg's Morning Sickness on 98 KUPD - Holmberg’s Heat Stroke Open supporting the Arizona Humane Society!

Two courses. Sold out. Great competition. A ton of laughs. And enough Arizona sunshine to remind everyone exactly how the tournament got its name.

Always a great day when golf, good people, and an even better cause come together. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make it such a fun event!

It's incredibly fulfilling to see the impact you can have on others. Coaching youth sports, like hockey for 8 years, has shown me the joy of helping kids discover a passion for a game. Years later, hearing 'Coach Jared' and seeing their excitement is truly rewarding.

He hit a parked semi truck at 60 miles an hour.

Steve Stowe came home sick from his banking job in August 2002, took cough medicine, and fell asleep on the US 60. They cut him out of the car with the jaws of life. Shattered hip socket. Permanent nerve damage. He still walks with a limp 24 years later.

Then came the part nobody sees: four years of self-pity, four years of anger and drinking in secret. His wife never gave him an ultimatum. What finally moved him was three kids he was missing.

In 2018 he climbed Kilimanjaro. He plays golf to a nine handicap on one working leg. And he built Apex Accounting and Advisory on the two things he knows best — numbers, and people.

Some days are silent and tough. The thought lingers: I'd be a terrible employee. Not because I'm lazy, but because working for myself means far more hours, yet it's enjoyable. The difference? Making my own decisions about when and how long to work, like choosing to put in hours from 7 AM to 10 PM.

Happy Women's Equality Day! Today marks the day, back in 1920, that women won the right to vote.

More than a century later, we get to spend our weeks in conversation with women who don't just have a seat at the table, they built the table.

So today we're celebrating a few of the powerhouse women who've sat across from Jan on Above & Beyond.

Different industries. Different stories. One thing in common: they saw where they wanted to go, and they went.
