Whatβs a W9? A 1099-NEC? A 1099-MISC? A 1096? Should I be filing these forms? π€·πΌββοΈ
β
The W9 form - Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification - is an IRS form, but not one you send to the IRS!
This is a form you will use to collect tax payer information from freelancers, consultants, contractors, and other self-employed individuals who perform work for your company without being an employee.
Simply Google β2025 W-9β and the IRS form should pop up. If you have not collected these yet, send them to your contractors so you have them back by the end of January. I encourage my clients to collect this form before the first payment is made to a contractor but donβt stress if you need to play catch up- youβre not alone!
β
1099-NEC- This is a Nonemployment compensation form you will produce in January reporting the income paid to your subcontractors. I recommend using a software like QuickBooks that makes this process super easy but it can be done manually as well. Each contractor you paid more then $600 to is required to receive a 1099-NEC from your company.
β
1099-MISC is used to report rents, royalties, prizes and awards, and other fixed determinable income.
β
A 1096 is simply the summary report that is prepared for the IRS totaling all the income you reported on 1099βs.
