Southside Elementary School in Hollister is proving that small changes can make a big difference. Led by Food Service Manager Suzanne Yamanishi, the school's organics program teaches students to sort waste and reduce food scraps through hands-on lessons and color-coded bins.

The results have been impressive. According to lead custodian Mr. Sanchez, daily landfill waste dropped from 12-15 garbage bags to just 2 - 3. Students have also become more mindful about food waste, helping create a culture of sustainability across campus.

In recognition of these efforts, Southside Elementary School received the 2026 Sustainable Schools Leadership Award, demonstrating how early sustainability education can create lasting change ♻️
