🎄"Mr. Frank's Journey: A Community's Christmas Gift"🎄
In the heart of Rhinelander, where the streets whisper tales of the past, stood a magnificent tree known as Mr. Frank. Marge Van Heuklon, the tree's owner, had always admired its grandeur, ever since it was planted in honor of Frank Magnus by his family in her front yard.
As Christmas approached last year, Laurie and Henry Schienebeck from Great Lakes Timber Professionals (GLTPA) noticed Marge's desire to give Mr. Frank a purpose beyond its majestic presence. Besse Forest Products, a member of GLTPA, was intrigued by this noble idea.
In August, Henry reached out to Matt Carothers of Superior Woodlands Co. (a division of Besse Forest Products) with a unique request. Could he measure Mr. Frank, a potential candidate for this year's Capitol Christmas tree?
Equipped with a clinometer and a laser, Matt and his son Jack embarked on this task. The tree measured a striking 32 feet, a perfect size for the Capitol.
Henry passed the measurements to the Capitol grounds crew, who were scouting for the perfect Christmas tree. They made a special trip to Rhinelander, evaluating Mr. Frank among other candidates.
The decision was made, and on November 14th, a dedicated team gathered at Marge's house. The air buzzed with excitement and a hint of nostalgia as they prepared to bid farewell to Mr. Frank.
Tom Melnarik from the Forest Industry Safety Training Alliance (FISTA) had the honor of cutting the tree. Ponsse, a company known for its expertise, provided a crane truck and skilled employees.
The tree was carefully lifted from its roots and placed onto a trailer provided by Superior Woodlands Company.
For three hours, they worked meticulously, securing the branches, and covering Mr. Frank with a tarp for his journey.
The next day, Ponsse led the procession, pulling the trailer through the streets to Madison.
As Mr. Frank arrived at the State Capitol, a sense of pride filled everyone’s hearts. This tree, once a symbol of remembrance in a small yard in Rhinelander, was now a beacon of joy and celebration for the entire community. Standing proudly inside Wisconsin’s State Capitol building as the chosen State Capitol Christmas tree for 2023, with a wonderful story and an honorable ending.
Mr. Frank's journey, from a cherished memory to a celebrated Christmas symbol, was a reminder of the power of community, tradition, and the spirit of giving.
