‘Antarctica’ by Australian artist Sidney Nolan, who visited there in January of 1964 was amazed of the colors he saw ‘expecting only the white of the ice and snow – but this was not so, it was black, ochre, dark green and blue, with an oyster-colored sky, and an indigo sea’. This 1954 painting by Rene Magritte ‘L’empire des Lumineres’ just sold for $121.2 million surpassing its $95 million estimate at Christie’s New York. Magritte, known for his Surrealist style, became fixated with the idea that night and day exist together – that they are one.

In a world where night always exists with day, good with evil, and sadness with happiness. This high price comes at a time when many have been fretting over a sluggish global art market.

Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (1889) Oil on Canvas, illustrates how the artist deliberately and passionately planned his compositions. In a letter from July 1888, Van Gogh states ‘You have to think of a thousand things at the same time,’ he wrote. This is not an artist crazily brushing his paint about the canvas without considering what he’s trying to achieve. ‘Self-Portrait’ can be viewed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
