4-thread? 3-thread? Flatlock? 🤔 Which seam should you actually use?

Your serger gives you options, but how do you know which one is right for your project?

🎬 Join me for Serger Savvy LIVE as we look at different seam choices, what they do, and how to decide which one to use. (And is there always just one right choice? 😉)

✨ Plus, there may be a surprise seam making an appearance!

💌 I received this beautiful surprise in the mail. A note of appreciation accompanied by something handmade. And I couldn’t think of a better kind of thank you.

Teaching serger owners how to make their machines “sing” is what I love to do, but seeing someone take that knowledge, make it their own, and keep creating? That’s the good stuff.

Thank you, Marlys, for taking the time to make and send this. I’m feeling very inspired and very appreciated today. ❤️

What’s something you can do with your serger today that once felt intimidating?

🍂 Patterns are just the starting point!

I love the Wrap Me Up Pattern because it’s quick, easy to construct, and so simple to customize for any season. With chillier months ahead, I’m ready to pull this pattern out and make some cozy, warm and stylish cowl neck wraps!

Some wraps I leave the edges raw, while others get a little decorative edge. On this version, I used the Raindrops Stitch! A lovely edge finish that adds just the right amount of embellishment.

🎬 I have a Tip Clip showing you how! Check it out on my Youtube channel.

The pattern also includes 3 customizable neckline facing options and can easily be lengthened or shortened to suit your frame.

✨ Want a little more guidance? There’s a workshop version, too, where I walk you through it step-by-step.

Sometimes the best serger lessons are hiding right inside your clothes!

🎬 My niece Alaina brought me a pair of pants that needed a repair, and when we turned them inside out, the original construction caught our attention. A COMBO STITCH (chainstitch + 3-thread overlock)!

Why this stitch?

This seam takes quite a bit of stress from sitting, bending and moving. This combination gives us the security of the chainstitch while finishing the edge with the 3-thread overlock.

So rather than just showing you the repair, we’re taking a closer look at the stitch itself.

🧵 What does it look like up close?
🧵 How is it threaded?
🧵 What settings do we use?
🧵 And how do we recreate it on the serger?

And there’s a little role reversal happening in this Tip Clip… Alaina usually helps me create my handouts, but this time she’s the one sitting at the machine! ❤️

When a made-to-measure suit doesn’t measure up… ✂️

This is why I love to sew—and why I can always justify having an “extensive” stash!

My nephew, Alex, called me last week. He said he had a “sewing dilemma” and asked if I could help him. One of his oldest friend’s wedding is tomorrow, August 29th. All of the groomsmen purchased made-to-measure suits. Alex’s wool gabardine pants were over 2 inches too short. These pants were the third (or maybe fourth) ill-fitting pair he had to return to an upscale, nationally known store whose hallmark is service. When he brought them back, he was told that there wasn’t enough time to alter them. That’s when he called me. After letting down the hem, it was evident that there wasn’t enough allowance for them to be lengthened adequately. Thank goodness the suits were black.

I searched through my stash and found some plain black linen that worked. A 2 ½”-wide strip stitched around the bottom of each leg provided the needed length. My iron steamed out the original hem crease completely.

🖤 After hand hemming and pressing, the fit was perfect!

🧵 One of my favorite ways to get comfortable with your serger? Make something you’ll actually use!

The Crossbody Bag is a fun way to play with zipper insertion, decorative cover/chainstitching and even creating your own fabric.

You’ll learn as you go 🪡 and end up with a great bag, too!

🧵 What if you gave yourself a few days just to sew, learn & create?

I’m heading to Camp Decorative Stitch this September! ✂️

I’m thrilled to be teaching a hands-on Serger Lab: Zippered Tablet Case! A fun project designed to help you spend time at your serger, learn new techniques, and leave with something fabulous you made yourself.

Camp Decorative Stitch is about more than the projects. It’s a chance to step away from the everyday, spend a few inspiring days with fellow makers, educators and simply enjoy sewing together. 💛

If a few days of creativity, learning, and connection sound good right about now, come join us at camp!
