BlueBack Health, LLC

BlueBack Health, LLC BlueBack Health is a strategic employee benefits and risk management advisory firm We are reducing costs by focusing on the factors that drive it.

We see your employee benefit program as an investment asset that can be leveraged to generate measurable value. Our thinking and approach aligns your company objectives with the needs and wellness of your employees and their families. To do so, we're shifting from the endless search for lower-cost health benefit plans to an innovative approach that steers clear of increased employee contributions.

BlueBack Advisors develops, implements and manages strategic programs that reduce or eliminate cost drivers while adding sustainable value. That’s the BlueBack Advisors difference.

We gathered at Lux Bond & Green for the presentation of the 2023 Chamber Walking Challenge prize donation.
As the 2nd Place finisher in the challenge, Eric Thompson of BlueBack Health, LLC presented our chosen charity Friends of Feeney with a check for $500.
As an act of kindness, Lux Bond & Green matched the donation with an additional $500. Their employees made up more than half of our walking team as well.

On behalf of our team at BlueBack Health, I am happy to announce we are celebrating our 15th year in business. When I started the company (from scratch) on January 8, 2008, the Great Recession was just beginning, but I didn’t have much concern about our ability to be successful. Some of that might have been ignorance, but a lot was based on the fundamental belief that if I bet on myself, I couldn’t lose. Looking back it was the absolute best decision I could have made. Yes, I had a 7 and 10-year-old in the house, but with the complete support of my wife, I made the leap, knowing that I was simply betting on myself. Building and running a company is not easy, but it’s also extremely rewarding. So today, as I reflect, I am simply humbled and proud to have had so many great clients, worked with so many talented team members, and had the unwavering support of my friends and family. There’s still a lot more to do…so here’s to looking forward to another 15 years of fun! - Eric Thompson

Employer-sponsored insurance covers almost 159 million non-elderly people. To provide a current snapshot of employer-sponsored health benefits, KFF conducts an annual survey of private and non-federal public employers with three or more workers. This is the twenty-fourth Employer Health Benefits Survey (EHBS) and reflects employer-sponsored health benefits in 2022. A note from BlueBack Health -
Earlier this week ConnectiCare announced it would be exiting the “Fully-Insured Small Group Market” and cease to sell new policies to employers on January 1, 2023, while allowing current customers to renew through May 1, 2023. Therefore, as of May 1, 2024, they will have officially exited the market.
In Connecticut, a Small Group Employer is defined as “an employer that employed an average of at least one but not more than fifty employees on business days during the preceding calendar year” in Bulletin HC-122 from the State of Connecticut Insurance Department (published 8.10.2018).
While on the surface this may not seem overly important (It has been reported that they currently cover but 22,000 employees in the Small Group Segment) we see it quite differently and are genuinely concerned with the viability of these employers to provide health coverage to their employees (insured or self-funded/level funded) in the years to come. Why are we concerned? The answer is simple…the cost of care is not going down and insurance carriers no longer want to cover employers that have higher than expected claims (through no fault of their own). Also, insurance carriers no longer want to negotiate with the state regarding rate filings and the public outcry that follows at a time when these plans are simply losing money.
In closing we know many unsophisticated insurance brokers are pushing newer self-insured plans to employers without best explaining benefits that are excluded and how future rates will be set. We are experts with these plans and will continue our journey to best educate our employer clients and help find ways to improve health and lower overall claim costs.
If you are a small group employer and want to learn more about this changing landscape (and what to do), please contact Eric Thompson of BlueBack Health at [email protected] or call him at 860-218-9474. -
