This January would have marked the 94th birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta. He was killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis. The civil rights activist is commemorated in many places across our great nation and here in our beautiful City of Glen Cove. He was the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery from 1954-60, where he rose to national prominence as a spokesman for the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-56. He led civil rights marches in Birmingham in 1963 that reverberated throughout the nation. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent campaign against segregation. As we celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, let us remember those who have fought so hard for justice and equality, and let us use this day to reaffirm our commitment to move our nation and world forward in a way that enables all people to live their lives to their fullest potential. In the words of Dr. King, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

THANK YOU TO ALL VETERANS
Jim and I are thankful to all veterans for their service and to the families who support them. We salute you and say thank you. Here are veterans in our family who have served and an image of my brother and his wife (both veterans) presenting a challenge coin to former Glen Cove Mayor, Ralph Suozzi. On this day, we say thank you to all veterans. The veterans in our family who have served include - Top Row L-R: MY DAD, James Hunter Mathews Sr., with his little brother, Frank Mathews, on his knee. Dad served in the Navy during WWII and Uncle Frank later served three tours of duty during the Vietnam War. MY MOM - Jean Pearsall Gaitley Mathews. Mom served in the Cadet Nurse Corps. during WWII and later worked in public health. JIM’s FATHER, Wilbert Stevenson. Wil served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in Egypt for part of the war. 4th Image: MY BROTHER, Retired Colonel James Hunter Mathews Jr, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan. MY SISTER-IN-LAW, Retired Chief Warrant Officer Nancy L. Christiano Mathews. Jim and I also have nieces and nephews on both sides of the family who have served or are currently serving. My parents passed away in 1997, my Uncle Frank in 1998, and Jim’s father in 2020. However, my brother, Hunter, his wife, Nancy, and our nieces and nephews are alive and well. Our gratitude to all who have served and serve - and our condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in the armed forces. It is important that we remember and honor these people. Their service must never be forgotten. It is because of them that we enjoy our freedom.

REMINDER: Polls are open today from 6 am - 9 pm
This is my grandmother, Annie Culbreth Gaitley. She was an accountant for the railroad, later worked in banking, and was the best grandmother any kid could have asked for. This smart, savvy, graceful, strong, assertive, compassionate businesswoman, wife and mother did not get the right to vote until she was 32 years old. She never took her vote for granted, neither should you. Polls are open today from 6 am - 9 pm. If you are eligible to vote and have not already voted, please make your way to the polls and cast your vote. Do it for you, do it for your family, neighbors, and nation, and do it for those who worked so hard for the opportunity to be part of the process. Every vote counts.
