Did You Know?

Spray tip flow rate is directly affected by spray pressure.

For most flat-fan spray tips, flow rate is proportional to the square root of pressure.

That means:

➡️ To double the flow rate, you need to increase the pressure by four times.

For example, if a 0.5-capacity spray tip delivers 0.35 GPM at 20 PSI, it can deliver 0.70 GPM at 80 PSI.

⚠️ But what if achieving the desired flow rate requires pressure above the spray tip’s maximum recommended operating pressure?

Operating a spray tip outside its recommended pressure range is generally not advisable. If a higher flow rate is needed, selecting a spray tip with a higher capacity is generally the better approach.

Understanding the relationship between pressure and flow rate is essential for proper sprayer calibration, spray tip selection, and application-rate management.

Did you know?

Spray tip wear can increase flow rate and alter the spray pattern, directly impacting application quality—even when the nozzle doesn’t look visibly damaged.

While the sprayer’s rate control system can compensate for increased flow and maintain the target application rate, it cannot correct a deteriorated spray pattern. The result can be uneven distribution and reduced application quality.

Why Does Spray Angle Matter?

Not all spray angles are created equal—and the spray angle you choose can affect how spray patterns overlap across the boom.

A 65° spray angle produces a much narrower pattern, while a 110° spray angle produces a wider pattern. But the spray angle is only one part of the equation.

Spray angle + nozzle spacing + boom height = spray pattern overlap.

Make sure to select the proper spray tip angle for your equipment setup. When these factors are properly matched, you can achieve a more uniform spray pattern across the boom.

Inside the TeeJet Lab | Measuring Droplet Size

What actually happens when we measure the droplets produced by a spray tip?

Take a look inside the TeeJet lab as we use specialized equipment to capture and analyze the spray plume and collect the data needed to characterize droplet size.

Each spray tip produces a range of droplet sizes. To accurately quantify and characterize this distribution, laser-based measurement equipment—such as the Oxford laser diffraction system—is used to analyze the droplets produced by the spray.

By following the procedures outlined in ISO 25358, the resulting droplet size distribution can be classified into categories ranging from Fine, Medium, Coarse, Very Coarse, Extremely Coarse, to Ultra Coarse.

From the spray tip to the final measurement, precision in testing is essential to understanding spray performance.

Did you know?

Droplet size classification is based on standardized measurement methods, first developed in England by the British Crop Protection Council, BCPC, in 1985 and most recently updated by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 25358—not simply on how a spray looks to the naked eye or the pattern observed on water-sensitive paper.

Water-sensitive paper can help evaluate spray coverage and deposition, but it cannot determine the actual droplet size classification of a spray.
