The Boot of Cortez is up for auction again. It is the largest surviving natural gold nugget from the Western Hemisphere, weighing a staggering 389.4 troy ounces (26.2 pounds or 12.1 kilograms). Named for its striking resemblance to a Mexican conquistador boot. It was unearthed in 1989 by a local ranch hand who was searching the Sonoran Desert in Mexico he found the enormous piece of gold using a cheap, entry-level Radio Shack metal detector.
