IMMIGRATION FACTS ABOUT COMING TO AMERICA:
UNITED STATES VERSUS CANADA (Part 1.)
Moving around the world was just as common from the time of Moses's journey to the Promised Land, to Marco Polo's trip to the Far East and to the Europeans migrations to the Americas, Travelers have shaped history!
I welcome you all to this edition of Travels & Immigration Matters. In this post, we shall be considering the opportunities and Challenges of migrating or living in two of the largest countries in the world - the United States and Canada:
There is nothing new about world migration: it has been going on for centuries, and people do it today to improve the quality of their lives, and they did it for the same reason two centuries ago. The discovery of the Americas in the 18th century stimulated a steady stream of voluntary and involuntary migrants from Europe and Africa. History had it that by 1820, about 11.3 million had journeyed to America, but most, about 8.7 million were taken as slaves from Africa. Then, coercion and contracts were the chief means by which the New World (Americas) recruited its labor force before the 19th century. However, for most immigrants today, arriving in the United States or Canada is a dream fulfilled!
As many have heard of the AMERICAN DREAM, so are others talking today about the new CANADIAN DREAM. While some are lucky to have a prior job waiting or have relatives or friends to stay with, in their new found home, others are not so fortunate. They may have to start on their own, through thick and thin until they find their path. The American Dream is the faith held by many in the United States of America that through hard work, courage, and determination one can achieve financial prosperity. These were values held by many early European settlers, and have been passed on to subsequent generations. In contrast, a writer once said of Canada that "by virtually every measure, Canada has surpassed the United States as the shining city on the hill, where everyone is safe to reach their potential. And people around the world have begun to notice. From the United States, refugees and asylum seekers are now fleeing into Canada hoping for a fair immigration hearing and a better future. And even international students are increasingly choosing Canada over the U.S ...Whether it was due to geography or history or even policy, we have arrived. Everything America once aspired to be, we now are. Not only have we achieved the fabled American Dream, we are arguably among the safest, healthiest, happiest human beings to have ever existed".
UNITED STATES VS. CANADA: DEMOGRAPHIC COMPARISON
The United States is slightly smaller than Canada in sheer land mass and occupies 9.63 million square kilometers. Bordered by Mexico to the south, and Canada to the north. Canada, however, is considerably larger than the United States but has about one-tenth the human population. In comparison, the entire population of Canada can be said to be about the same as California, a State in the U.S. Therefore, if California should secede and declares her independence from the U.S today, perhaps it will be a more vibrant nation than Canada.
UNITED STATES VS. CANADA: NEW IMMIGRATION RATE
In addition to the approximately 11 million unlawfully present immigrants in the U.S; over the past 20 years, the United States has granted permanent residency status to an average of about 1 million immigrants each year. These new "GREEN CARD" recipients qualify for residency in a wide variety of ways – as family members of current U.S. residents, recipients of employment visas, refugees and asylum seekers, or winners of a visa lottery – and they include people from nearly every country in the world. But their geographic origins gradually have been shifting. U.S. government statistics show that a smaller percentage comes from Europe and the Americas than did so 20 years ago, and a growing share now comes from Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East-North Africa region. On the other hand, Canada's visas points system is designed to attract only immigrants who show promise of being able to join in and contribute to their new communities. According to CIC, it has by and large succeeded in meeting the "immediate and longer-term need for highly skilled professionals and addresses Canada's broader immigration objectives. Meaning, the doors of Canada is only opened to you if you're highly educated, skilled or connected to Canadian citizens or residents. On average over the last three years, Canada has admitted approximately 300,000 permanent residents annually. However, these days, most desperate immigrants seeking the Canadian Dream, are coming to Canada illegally across the U.S - Canada border.
To be continued……
Having provided you with the above information, there is need to make it clear that it may be difficult to rely on general information placed out there in the public domain or on social media as a measure of determining which of these two countries will be right for you to live in. Perhaps not even an expert on Immigration matters can advise on which one of these nations will be a safer place tomorrow… may be the answer really lies within you. I think you’re the only one who can say or decide where the path of destiny would lead you! But whichever you decide to go for, I hope it turns out to be your promised land!
