As the world mourns Gloria Steinem, who died September 2 at 92, her legacy also offers an opportunity to remember the Black women who helped shape it. 🖤

From Dorothy Pitman Hughes and Shirley Chisholm to Fannie Lou Hamer, Florynce Kennedy, Alice Walker and Maya Angelou, Black women challenged Steinem’s thinking, stood alongside her in the fight for equality and helped broaden a feminist movement often centered on white, middle-class women.

Steinem herself once said she learned feminism “disproportionately from Black women.”

He’s helping young Black boys fall in love with reading!

Former teacher Alvin Irby founded Barbershop Books, a program that places books in barbershops to encourage young Black boys to read in spaces that already feel familiar.

The idea came to him while teaching first grade in the Bronx, and it has grown into a movement rooted in literacy, representation, and community.

Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan, an internist turned not-for-profit CEO, spoke to Forbes about career chapters and the growing army of workers over the age of 65.

Minter-Jordan, who was recognized on Forbes’ 50 over 50 list in 2025, says her biggest priority at AARP “is working to ensure that the workforce is reflective and prepared for the longevity economy,” referring to the fact that Americans are living and working longer today.

According to AARP, nearly 54 million Americans aged 50 plus are working, with workers 65 and older now making up 8% of the labor force, which is double their share 25 years ago.
