New study by the U.S. Forestry Service(I think) shows that the urban tree canopy is actually declining! What happened to the Chicago Tree Initiative that was supposed to increase the canopy to 20% by 2020?

Whether you like snow or not it is important for the deciduous trees to have snow cover. It insulates the root systems in case we get extremely low temperatures.

If you have Spruce trees that you care about have them checked as soon as possible. We have had an explosion of needlecast diseases this year is Illinois. The evidence is present now. It pays to be pro-active. Once a Spruce tree is damaged, it never looks the same. Spray programs must be done in the spring. Your Spruce trees are irreplaceable. Sure you can plant another tree, but you can not replace the time it took to grow them!

Don't rake and bag those leaves! What a waste! Mulch them into your lawn using your mulching mower. Use them as mulch in your flower beds and under your trees. Compost them. They are loaded with nutrients and organic matter.

Early fall color can be beautiful but it can be a sign of stress. If your trees are changing early you might have them checked out by a certified arborist.
