All caterpillars are not the same!

In Wisconsin, caterpillars of many types are commonly found at this time of year. Some are invasive pests, like the spongy moth on the left of the image, that devour the leaves of many types of trees.

But other caterpillars are native to Wisconsin and are not nearly as troublesome, like the forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) in the middle and the eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) on the right.

Forest tent caterpillars have a blue head, blue stripes down each side of their bodies and cream- or yellow-colored spots resembling the shape of footprints down their backs. They prefer aspen and oak leaves. Forest tent caterpillars do not create silk nests, but silk may be found on bark or along twigs.

Eastern tent caterpillars have black hairy bodies with yellow stripes and oval-shaped blue dots along their sides. They prefer fruit tree leaves such as black cherry, apple or crabapple. Caterpillars spin silky cocoons in forks of small tree branches in late spring.
