Went through the box from the Flood of 1993 today. Found a few more photos and articles, too many to post here. Wish company president Bob Dixon was around today. Hard to believe it's the 30th anniversary of the flood. This was one of Bob's proudest moments, because he was able to help the community at a time of need. I remember at 2am on July 31, 1993, Bob and wife Mary delivered water to the crews at Lincoln-Douglas Square, as they worked through the night trying to keep the water from taking out the sandbag dam in downtown Alton. Sadly, the next day, when the river crested, the dam gave way.

August 1 marks 30 years since the river's peak during the Great Flood of 1993. One of company president Bob Dixon's proudest moments was being able to help area residents when they needed drinking water. So many stories from the flood, from taking water through a winding path, then down a steep gravel hill, to a Baptist church in Grafton, delivering to a helicopter in Fieldon, Bob and Mary delivering water at 1am at Lincoln-Douglas square, everyone working overtime to get the water (and beer) delivered, the forklift batteries overheating due to so much use. Thanks to every one of you who helped in time of need.

Hard to believe it was 15 years ago today that Dixon Distributing was sold! Time sure flies!

Some of you who worked at Dixon Dist. might remember this chair! It’s on sale right now, $45!

Sorry for the delay in this post, but the past few months have been difficult. Former Dixon Distributing president Bob Dixon passed away 5 months ago today....hard to believe how time flies. Just 5 weeks after Bob passed on November 14, 2022, his younger brother John E. “Jack” Dixon, 83, passed away on December 22, 2022. Jack was born March 30, 1939 in Alton. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Jr. “Jim”, Don, and Bob. Younger sister Jane Dixon Whobrey is the last surviving sibling. Jack was involved with Dixon Distributing until retiring in 1989, then sold his shares in the company to Bob in 1993. Jack was able to enjoy a long retirement doing the things he loved most.

It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of former company president, Bob Dixon, who passed away on November 14th. He began working for the company in 1960, after finishing service with the Air Force. He served as company president for 35 years: from 1973 until the company was sold in 2008. He leaves behind his wife Mary (seen in the photo from June of this year), sons Scott and Craig, 3 grandchildren, two siblings Jack Dixon and Jane (Larry) Whobrey, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He passed peacefully with family at his side after a valiant fight with MDS, a relatively rare blood cancer. He was a sometimes tough but always fair boss, and those who knew him well came to realize he was a wonderful family man with a heart of gold. He thought of others before himself, and treated everyone with respect. He will truly be missed! We love you, Bob!

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Jean Marlene Dixon. Her husband, Walter James Dixon, Jr., was president of Dixon Distributing until his passing in 1973, and Jean remained an owner until 1993. Jean was born in Alton on April 29, 1932, to Edward and Eugenia (Huber) Ruckman. She married W.J. Dixon Jr. in 1952, and is survived by their 3 children Judy, Jody and W.J. "Jim" Dixon III. She was always so lively and fun, with a laugh that made everyone feel joy. She will be missed!

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Roger Hurley, 80, a longtime employee of Dixon Distributing. Roger was always a fun-loving guy with a quiet but funny sense of humor. He started working for Dixon Distributing after first working at Owens-Illinois. Roger was an enlisted seaman for the US Navy for three years. He retired from Dixon Distributing as warehouse manager.
Roger was the son of Joseph and Susie (Cummings) Hurley. He was born Aug. 17, 1940. In 1965 he married Roberta Miller at St. Norbert's Church in Hardin. She survives, as does his son David (Amy) Hurley, and 4 grandchildren.
Roger was the owner of Hardin Package Liquor, which he purchased in 1981 and ran for 40 years. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteer fireman and a proud Ducks Unlimited sponsor in Calhoun County. He loved duck hunting, having hunted for 60 years, and also loved golf. He will truly be missed!

It is with a heavy heart that we share news of the death of William "Billy" Kadell, longtime employee and friend. Billy joined Dixon Distributing in the 1956, and retired in 1983, after having done many jobs at the company. The photo here of Billy was from the late 1960's or early 1970's. Born in 1923, son of William F. and Frances A (Goetten) Kadell, he passed away at age 95 on Saturday, February 16, 2019. He was preceded in death by his longtime wife Vivian W. (Marshall) Kadell. An early invoice from Chevalley-Dixon, dated November 27, 1936. The invoice lists the beers Edelweiss & Hyde Park beers, but the company had just started delivering Budweiser in June of that year. Indeed, the invoice is for 4 cases of Budweiser, which cost $1.95 per case after the 25 cent return credit upon returning the empty case.
