Regardless of the size of your company, social media governance is something you should care about (a lot). Without proper governance, your company is assuming all kinds of unnecessary risk: legal, compliance, regulatory and reputation. Most of the companies making headlines because their Twitter account got hacked or their social media manager accidentally posted something awful that was intended

for his or her personal account are there because they did not have a proper governance model in place. Protect what you’ve built by putting a governance structure for your organization. Visit www.sernasocial.com/governance for more.

The latest on the blog from CEO Sue Serna:

📣📣📣 On this episode of Sue's Soapbox: This morning’s Social Media Today, LLC newsletter featured a really interesting – and eyeroll-inducing – headline: “Meta Touts Detection Efforts Ahead of Anti-Scam Summit.” Essentially, ahead of this big summit, Meta has released some figures to “prove” that it is doing something to combat the rampant scam ads all over its platforms. This, of course, would have nothing to do with last month’s positively astounding Reuters reporting that Meta knew about the rampant scams and in fact was set to make 10 percent of its 2024 revenue from scam ads.

This is a classic example of a social media platform cherry picking numbers that make them look good. It's also a classic example of trying to demonstrate progress while not really making much at all. Bottom line, Sue is not impressed -- and I hope you will take the time to read my full post about why these numbers aren't as impressive as they may seem at first.

CEO Sue Serna spoke three times this week at 3M's annual Media & Technology Governance Summit on (1) social listening, (2) taking great photos with your phone and (3) social media governance

From Sue: I want to highlight what 3M is doing here. THIS is what leadership in the social media governance space looks like, folks. As I told attendees this morning, many large companies do not yet emphasize governance of social (or other stuff) -- and they have opened themselves to a whole lot of risks. Many companies do not have governance policies or protocols, FTEs dedicated to governance work or leadership buyin that governance matters. Hosting an event like this one, making it an annual event, inviting internal stakeholders from all departments, including critical tool vendors in the conversation, asking other companies to learn along with 3Mers and having senior leaders show up in support... all of these are ways that 3M is a leader in the governance space. I certainly hope more companies will consider events like this one and putting governance on a front-and-center stage. It belongs there.

New on the blog from CEO Sue Serna: I must admit, last week I had a pretty good chuckle over the video of Mark Zuckerberg absolutely failing during a live demo of Meta’s new $800 AI-enabled glasses. During the live demo, Zuckerberg tried and failed repeatedly to pick up a WhatsApp call on the glasses. It reminded me distinctly of Elon Musk’s failed “bulletproof” glass demo, in which the supposed bulletproof glass shattered on impact instead of remaining intact as it was supposed to.

In both cases, the CEO was left to flounder in front of a live audience and a huge streaming audience, making bad quips to try to cover their embarrassment.

These two incidents are my two favorite examples of a corporate live event going disastrously wrong. But there are plenty of examples out there. For some reason, executives seem to think that doing a totally live demo is a great idea. They are super keen to host a livestream event with millions of people tuning in to watch them. Maybe it’s an ego thing. But it seems like many executives don’t consider Murphy’s Law.

A slight departure into personal cyber safety today, but a super important one for anyone with older relatives who need help staying safe online. PLEASE READ.

According to the FBI, Americans over the age of 60 reported almost $5 billion in total fraud in 2024 – and those were just the reported cases. To quote National Cybersecurity Alliance Executive Director Lisa Plaggemier at last week’s NCA Convene conference, “They know they’re being targeted, and they’re mad about it.” To address this huge need, NCA is launching a new campaign and printed workbook and microsite for older folks titled Then & Now. In my opinion, this is a smashing home run of an effort to educate in an entertaining and easily accessible way.

🚨🚨 👵👴 If you are a human with older folks in your life who fall into this high-risk target category, read my blog post outlining my top 5 reasons why this booklet is great and order yourself a couple of copies (or more than a couple!)

🚨🚨 ⚕️🏥🩺 If you work in the medical field specifically: NCA is eager to try to get these booklets into doctor's offices and medical facilities. So if you have connections in that space, please spread the word!

New on the blog from CEO Sue Serna: The National Cybersecurity Alliance is encouraging people to set a safe word with their families, coworkers, caretakers of elderly relatives, etc. I love this idea because it is so simple but brilliant. It doesn’t rely on fancy technology or require you to download a special app. And it’s super secure because the information just lives inside your brain. Remember, the scammers always play on urgency – your loved one needs help immediately, your IT support desk needs information urgently. A safe word puts a simple, quick and effective check in place before you take the action they are requesting.

Also, bonus! There's a super cool exercise featuring three audio phone calls - one is a human and two are not. Can you tell the difference? I encourage you to try! It's harder than you think!

In a campaign launched earlier this year, the National Cybersecurity Alliance launched an effort to get individuals to create safe words for their families, close friends, coworkers or caregivers for elderly family members. Essentially, you establish a safe word with this person or group of people a

New on the blog from CEO Sue Serna: Yesterday, the headline of the Social Media Today, LLC email newsletter stopped me in my tracks: “Meta enhances protection for brand IP.” Exsqueeze me?

Turns out, Meta very very quietly launched a thing called Brand Rights Protection last year. 🤯 The basic idea is that Meta wants to make it easier for large brands and companies to work with Meta in taking down rogue pages, imposter accounts and other things that would infringe on a brand’s intellectual property. Here's my take on the tool, its potential and the numerous issues I see with its current state. Still, credit where credit is due. It's nice to see Meta finally taking a step toward helping companies protect their brands. Hopefully much more will follow.

Meta updates its Brand Rights Protection hub, adding more features. Here’s what you need to know about Brand Rights Protection, and my hottake on the potential of this tool and the pitfalls I see.
