With the holidays in full swing, millions of toy building block sets will be gifted to children worldwide. A few of these bricks will end up on the floor and under your foot during a late-night trip to the bathroom. It's no wonder why, billions of these tiny plastic pieces are produced yearly!
This begs the question: How do toy companies manufacture at a rate that keeps up with this unrelenting demand?
These plastic pieces are manufactured in bulk through a process called injection molding. The process begins by heating plastic pellets at a high temperature. Once the plastic melts into a fluid, machines force it into a mold that reforms it into the classic brick-like shape.
Injection molding is excellent for plastic products due to cost efficiency and quick production cycle. Automation can create the parts in seconds instead of the minutes or hours taken by other less efficient methods.
So, the next time you watch your kids build their playset, take a minute to remember that each of those little toy pieces had to be built too.
..and they were probably created faster than the time it took you to read this post!
