Effective communication doesn’t have to be complicated.

Today’s Productive Communication training with Niagara focused on a few simple behaviors that can make a big difference:

• Ask better, open-ended questions
• Listen to understand
• Focus on what your audience needs
• Use names and visuals to increase engagement
• Be mindful of people’s time

When we engage people more and build stronger relationships, our communication becomes more productive.People are more likely to listen, share, collaborate and take action.

Everyone left with one behavior they’ll intentionally practice over the next two weeks.

Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference in how we work together.

Make appreciation a habit.

Notice the good.
Say it out loud.
Do it often.

A few words of appreciation can make someone’s entire day.

The more you know about people, the more connected you become.

During my prep call for a recent training, the leader mentioned that Brady, one of his packaging engineers, does magic at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. I had no idea what a big deal that was!

I asked Brady to kick us off after lunch with a few tricks — and WOW. He amazed us!

It reminded me how much talent and passion we have around us that has nothing to do with a job title.

Maybe someone on your team is a BBQ master, knows time-saving tricks in Excel, loves to bake or can plan a great party.

Get curious about your people.

The more we know about our teams, clients and other departments, the more opportunities we have to connect, engage and appreciate each other.

Highlight what people love and what they’re good at. Everyone wins.

Thank you, Brady, for sharing your talent with us! I’ve officially added a trip to the Magic Castle to watch you perform to my list!

Small communication changes can reduce stress, increase productivity and help people value each other’s time.

That was a key takeaway from an 8-hour training I recently facilitated with a team of packaging engineers. Our goal: communicate technical information more effectively to non-technical audiences—and elevate communication within the team.

We worked on:

Clearer emails—stronger subject lines, fewer paragraphs, more bullets and visuals

Simpler slides—20 words or less, plus feedback on tone, body language and clarity

More context—helping others understand what you do, what you’re working on and why

That last one matters. Something labeled “urgent” may not actually be needed right away. When people understand each other’s priorities and workload, there’s more respect for time—and less unnecessary stress.

We also unplugged, learned more about each other and shared what we appreciate about our teammates.

Face-to-face, candid conversations create clarity, connection and breakthroughs.

Looking forward to our follow-up in a few months!

Behind every successful team is something that often gets overlooked: the way people communicate. Great teams know the importance of effective communication.

Misunderstandings, unclear expectations, and difficult conversations don’t just impact culture. They impact productivity, retention, and the bottom line.

If your team is ready to strengthen communication, leadership, and collaboration, let’s start the conversation.
