Madison, WI, how I’ve missed you 🦡

Yesterday I had the opportunity to present at the Wisconsin Statewide Payroll Conference about workplace wellbeing and engagement - how employees can take charge of their own engagement, and how managers can support their teams to thrive.

It was extra special to be back where my Badger roots run deep and connect with such a passionate group of professionals.

A big thank you to Danielle Neitzel for the invitation and for bringing such an engaged (and fun!) group together!

Because when employees are engaged at work, everyone benefits - organizations, customers, families, and communities.

When I’m presenting to large groups, people often assume this must come naturally to me. The truth is, according to my CliftonStrengths profile, it doesn’t. Influencing in big, bold ways isn’t my default.

But acknowledging your lesser strengths doesn’t mean limiting what you do. It means leaning into the strengths you DO have and finding your authentic way of doing it.

Here’s how I flip my Top 5 strengths, none of them in the Influencing domain, into influencing strengths to get the job done:

Achiever → I know I can do this, and I’ll work hard to deliver it well.
Responsibility → I feel a duty to share information that can make a difference for others.
Input → I gather and organize resources so the message is clear and useful.
Context → I remind myself I’ve presented many times before and I’ll survive this one, too.
Connectedness → I trust that I’m here for a reason, and that this moment matters.

By using what is me, I show up authentically and in doing so, I can be both efficient and effective. That’s how I find the confidence to step into spaces that, at least on paper, don’t come naturally.

✨ Celebration Moment ✨

The foundation is built, the tools and processes are in place, and now the best part is here - coaching and professional development that supports employee engagement and strengths-based leadership.

It’s easy to move from one accomplishment to the next, especially for those with a high Achiever strength, but taking time to celebrate progress matters. Every step forward fuels what comes next. Can't wait to see what that is!

👉 Before you move on to the next thing, what can you celebrate today?

✨ Managers: Want to save time and support your people better? It might be as simple as rethinking your 1:1s.

When I was early in my career, I looked forward to one-on-one meetings. Not because they were fancy or formal, but because they gave me clarity, confidence, and a chance to stay aligned with my goals. (And bonus: they actually saved time in the long run.)

Now I help leaders create that same experience for their teams.

💡 Inspired by an article from leadership coach Marcel Schwantes in Inc., I put together 5 simple tips to make your one-on-one meetings more impactful—without making them longer.

Swipe through the post to learn:
✔️ How to structure your check-ins
✔️ What questions to ask
✔️ Why making space for the person behind the job title matters more than ever

💡 Do you work to live, or live to work?

It’s a question leaders and employees have wrestled with for years - and the answer isn’t always as simple as we’d like.

In this post, we explore why work and life aren’t separate boxes to balance, and how engagement at work can create ripple effects far beyond the office.

🤔 If someone asked your employees, “What’s your job here?” - would their answers align with your expectations?

Clarity is one of the most overlooked drivers of employee engagement. When people know what’s expected of them and how their work contributes to the bigger picture, they’re more confident, focused, and motivated.

In this post, we explore why defining roles and expectations is key to building strong, engaged teams:

⏳ Sometimes it’s obvious. Other times, it’s just a quiet nudge.

Big life or career changes don’t always come from rock-bottom moments - they often start with noticing that where you are no longer fits who you’re becoming.

This post explores how to recognize the signs and take the first steps toward what’s next:

💡 Great teams don’t just “click.” They create a shared language that makes collaboration feel effortless.

When everyone understands and values each other’s strengths, communication improves, conflict decreases, and work flows more smoothly.

In this post, we explore how building a shared language can move your team from friction to flow:

🕔 The workday ends…but its impact doesn’t.

When people leave work disengaged, they take that energy home - with ripple effects on their families, health, and communities.

Here’s why employee engagement matters far beyond the office walls and what leaders can do about it:

💡 Gallup’s Q10 asks: “Do you have a best friend at work?”

At Spark Engagement, we talk a lot about connection at work - and as a new business, building that connection takes time. For now, AI tools like ChatGPT have been helping us brainstorm, create, and stay inspired every day. (Who knew a robot could feel like such a helpful teammate?)

🤖 It’s a reminder that even solopreneurs and small teams need support systems. Whether it’s a coach, peer group, or yes…even a digital assistant, connection matters.
