As I was looking for something relatable to post on, I came across this article: The 5 C’s of Data Analytics: Building Trust in the Data Echo Chamber. It’s a quick read detailing what and why the 5 C’s of data analytics are important.

Let’s face it—we live in a world full of data. It’s everywhere. And if you’re not seeing that…you might be overlooking what’s right in front of you. Everything today seems to be online. Written checks are becoming a thing of the past (sorry…some of us still use them 😄). And AI? It’s everywhere.

But what I found interesting is this—these 5 C’s aren’t just about data.
They’re about life. About business. About trust.

Let’s take a look at our first C – Consent. Consent basically means you give permission or agree to something. On both of our websites, we have Privacy Policies and Terms & Conditions that you have to consent to. No big deal, right?

But how many of us actually take the time to read through every line when downloading an app for a game to play, or checking out online? Probably not many.

Deadlines stack up. Calendars fill. And before you know it, you’re running from one thing to the next without a moment to breathe.

The reality is… busy isn’t going away.

But how we manage it can make all the difference.

A few things that help during the busiest seasons:

✅ Prioritize what actually matters –
✅ Create small pockets of 30–60 minutes of focus time –
✅ Set boundaries where you can –
✅ Take care of yourself – You need to energize!
✅ Simplify whenever possible –

And one more that’s easy to overlook…
✅Sometimes the best thing you can do is STOP.

Step away. Take a break. Go for a walk. Do something that actually re-energizes you.

It may feel counterproductive … but it’s not. You will have a clearer, more focused head to tackle those priorities!

Paul Chaney, ACDA, CISA is gearing up for his next training! He will be speaking at a Data Analytics Training at the end of the month - March 24 & 25 - for the IIA South Dakota chapter.

This training is a practical, hands-on-training designed for auditors with a limited background who want to use data more effectively in their work. Excel will be the primary tool for these 2-half day sessions, walking the auditor through the process - from planning/obtaining data to cleaning/analyzing data, and then reporting on the data. Watch the data comes full circle!

🌱 Planting good seeds is important, but not all seeds thrive.

In audit and analytics, great ideas start every day, but without follow-through and oversight, some audit organizations continue to struggle. They get crowded out by competing priorities, not enough time to do a project the right way, and so many other reasons.

But strong teams don’t just have ideas. They:

🌿 Reinforce through ongoing training and skill-building
🌿 Support with leadership buy-in and clear accountability
🌿 Allow time for controls and analytics to mature
🌿 Revisit and validate through regular testing and review
🌿 Remove barriers that limit adoption and effectiveness

Real improvement isn’t about one good idea; it’s about staying with it.
