Big news for our region: Grand Forks has been ranked #1 in the nation for per-capita project development among similar-sized communities, based on job creation, square footage developed, and total investment.

This recognition is more than a headline, it’s proof that Grand Forks knows how to turn planning into ex*****on, and investment into outcomes. The projects cited, from major industrial development to expansions, show what’s possible when a community is proactive, collaborative, and ready.

The ecosystem is becoming a force multiplier. Proximity plus partnership equals speed.

Today, The HIVE hosted U.S. Senator John Hoeven as he highlighted Grand Forks’ expanding tech momentum. We also heard from catalysts across the community, including Thomas Swoyer ( Grand Sky Business and Aviation Park), Bill Elmquist (Technology Applications Group), Randy Trask ( Q Station), and J.C. Van Liere (Kaze).

The HIVE exists for this: connecting the people, resources, and infrastructure that turn ideas into momentum.

🐝 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘 | Meet Ian Morrow

Ian is the Chief Pilot at Vertical Works, a design and fabrication shop for drones launched in April 2025. Their team covers the entire lifecycle of UAS—design, build, and flight testing—with a focus on aircraft that transition from vertical to horizontal flight.

Right now, Ian is fabricating two scale models of the XTI Trifan 600 aircraft, utilizing its unique Tri Copter design. His team is perfecting the half-scale model before completing the 10-foot version.

When asked about The HIVE, Ian shared: “The HIVE has created a collaborative space where I can work, meet new friends from similar companies, and stay up-to-date on the fast-paced evolution of our industry.”

After hours, you’ll find him biking or flying drones and R/C airplanes with friends.

🐝 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘 | Meet Rafe Rasmussen

Rafe is a UAS Systems Engineer intern with Meadowlark Aircraft Company- a Group 2 and 3 manufacturer specializing in bespoke and white-label drone solutions.

He spends his days designing, integrating, and testing aircraft systems—often heading out with the flight team to bring new designs to life. 🐝 Part 108 Day at The HIVE

We started the day with this month’s Beyond the Buzz, hosted by the Northern Plains UAS Test Site, which focused on the topic of Part 108 and its importance to the UAS industry.

In the afternoon, Erin Roesler led an open forum, breaking down the 700+ page proposed Part 108 rule and sharing key insights with attendees both in-person and online. It was a valuable opportunity for our community to better understand the rule and its potential impact on the future of UAS.
