Final night of QuickBooks Online Advanced Training tonight.

What I’ve enjoyed most isn’t teaching the software. It’s seeing people connect the dots. QuickBooks is just a tool. When attendees understand the why behind the accounting, that’s when the real learning happens.

There’s nothing quite like seeing that lightbulb turn on and watching someone’s confidence grow.

Your mid-year financial check starts with four reports. If your books are clean, this takes 10 minutes:

1. Profit & Loss (Jan–May, vs. last year)
2. Balance Sheet (assets vs. liabilities, today)
3. Cash Flow summary
4. Accounts Receivable aging (who owes you)

Together they answer: Am I profitable? Am I liquid? Who owes me money? Three questions every owner should be able to answer cold.

Fact: For most owners, we pay for ourselves in three places — deductions you'd otherwise miss, tax mistakes you'd otherwise make, and hours you didn't know you had.

The real cost is going without one.

The 3 numbers every owner should be able to say out loud, without checking:

1️⃣ Cash on hand — what's actually in the account today
2️⃣ Gross profit margin — what % of revenue you keep after direct costs
3️⃣ Monthly burn — what it costs to keep the lights on each month

Those three answer most "can I afford to ___?" decisions.

Know them cold. The rest is detail.
