Wow that's something

The landline used to sit on a little table in the hallway with a cord long enough to stretch into the pantry if you needed privacy, which you always did. Nobody knew where you were until you called back. Nobody expected you to. I think about that more than I think about most things I've lost. Not in a sad way. Just a noticing way. My kids think I'm exaggerating when I describe waiting three days for film to develop just to find out half the pictures were of someone's thumb. I'm not exaggerating. I'm reporting.

I told my family I was "unavailable" for exactly one afternoon last month and turned my phone completely off, which felt borderline illegal at first. Nobody died. The house did not catch fire. My daughter texted twice, got no response, and eventually figured it out on her own, which is apparently a skill she has after all. I came back four hours later feeling like a slightly different, slightly calmer person. I'm doing it again next month. I've already warned everyone.

There was a version of me who thought Friday night meant somewhere loud with a line outside. That version would not recognize the current one, standing in the backyard in gardening clogs, checking on tomatoes I forgot I planted, holding a drink I made myself because it's cheaper and honestly better. The tomatoes are doing great, for what it's worth. I check on them the way I used to check my phone. Priorities shift. Nobody warns you how good that feels.
