Utility records are often siloed and stored in GIS, CAD, or in a project file.

They’re often shared as a set of drawings used by field crews on-site.

A locator finds the line, marks it in paint, closes the locate ticket and moves to the next address. That's the job as it's written, and nothing about it is wrong.

Then somebody needs depth.

Maybe a design engineer months later, maybe a bore crew next Tuesday.

The paint is long gone and there's no depth number anywhere, so a locator goes back to the project to find what was located weeks ago.

That's what Marvin Lopez and Michael Leppitsch from Point One Navigation get into here.

The locate was done right. The second trip happens anyway.

A utility locate can get challenged months after the crew has moved on, in a damage claim or a design dispute. When that happens, someone has to prove what was found in the ground and how accurately it was captured.
