Today, we honor the life and memory of Ray Dickerson, a cherished member of our community.
It's with a heavy heart that we express our deepest condolences and unwavering support for him and all who loved him.
Ray was a remarkable individual who left a lasting impact on those around him. From his talents in dancing, singing, and rapping, to his aspirations in the hip hop scene with his group, Black Market Music, Ray was a force to be reckoned with.
Despite facing personal challenges, he pursued his dreams with determination and courage. After graduating, Ray set out to Chicago to pursue higher education in music production and entertainment at the suggestion of a family member. With the encouragement of his family, Ray stepped out in faith on a personal mission to chase after his dream.
Despite his promising start, tragedy struck in 1994 when he was reported missing, only to miraculously reappear weeks later in Grand Rapids, profoundly changed.. Though his struggles with mental health remained a mystery, Ray was cherished and loved by his large supportive family and community.
Ray's presence was unique and welcoming. His story teaches us to love unconditionally and to fight for those we cherish, regardless of their imperfections. Ray was not only a beloved brother and uncle, he brought joy and inspiration to all who knew him, even amidst his own battles. He is a reminder for us to live life more abundantly with a heart full of joy.
It is with deep sadness that we share Ray's passing. Despite being a mentally impaired Ward of the State of Michigan, on March 22, 2024, a video circulating online depicted Ray's deceased body laying frozen in the snow. There was no proper notification to his family or local authorities. Ray was found neglected and abused, a heartbreaking betrayal of his rights and dignity.
At First Elevation, we stand for justice and accountability. We demand a thorough investigation into Ray's death to ensure justice is served and to prevent such neglect from happening again. We're committed to supporting efforts to get Ray the legal representation he deserves, using our resources and connections to amplify his story and drive real change.
Ray's story reminds us of our duty to protect the vulnerable in our community. Let us honor his memory by fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves.
