Exactly five months ago today, one simple question changed everything. This picture of Abertha and Florence means the world to me, because this was the moment that truly sparked our mission here at Window Wolf.
Five months ago, I came across Tasty Africa KC. They had just moved out of a ghost kitchen after a landlord dispute and were basically starting at square one. Their Google Maps location was completely wrong, no one knew they had moved to Overland Park, and they were resorting to Facebook Marketplace just trying to get customers through the door. I walked in unannounced. They didn’t even have their own sign up yet. The old “La Patron” sign was still hanging. Abertha actually looked at me and asked if I was there for Mexican food. I told her I was there to try her cooking. I sat down, ordered, and when she brought my food out, I asked if I could clean her windows for free.
That single act of kindness turned into a video about their struggles, their incredible story, and a plea to Kansas City to help get their Google location fixed. What happened next completely blew my mind.
The video went viral with hundreds of thousands of views. They sold out several days in a row. Fox News came out to do a story. The catering calls started pouring in. In a matter of days, a business that was completely hidden turned into an Overland Park gem feeding this community authentic African cuisine.
Looking back on this 5-month milestone, this experience is what catapulted our platform. It became the ground floor for Window Wolf being a community-first business. Telling the stories of the unseen and unheard owners who make our local community special. Bringing new faces through their doors, and keeping their storefronts shining.
I am so grateful the universe brought Abertha and Florence into my life.
But here’s the reality of small business: things have slowed down for them again. That viral moment gave them the spotlight they deserved, but sustaining it takes all of us. So today, I’m asking you: please go get lunch or dinner there this week.
