We anticipate shutting off the system on October 1st. Please remember the homeowner is responsible to keep track of the meter reading to ensure their allotment has not been exceeded. If you have gone over and would like to continue to water for the rest of the season you'll need to lease another share. Otherwise, you can pay the penalty and the shut off fee but you will unable to use the water for the remainder of the season. If we shut off your service there is a $100 shut off fee.
Many have asked why the change was made to transfer the irrigation billing of some homeowners to Grantsville City. When subdivisions are built, the developer has two options: pay an outdoor impact fee of approximately $25,000 or transfer an irrigation share, costing between $7,000 and $9,000, to Grantsville City. This share was then attached to each property. This practice has been standard for all subdivisions with irrigation access for over 20 years. While the share increases your property value, it cannot be sold or transferred. We should have been billing the city, and the city would then bill the homeowner. We are now correcting this oversight. We currently collect a $200 assessment per share. Anything above that is charged by Grantsville City. Grantsville Irrigation Company (GIC) will contine to manage and maintain the irrigation system. This change only affects those with shares attached to the property. This does not affect irrigation shares that are directly owned by the individual shareholder.
For agricultural shares and residential shares owned by individuals and not tied to a property, GIC will continue to assess those shares annually. Assessments will be paid directly to GIC. The leasing of shares will still be managed through GIC.
The allocation per share will be determined by GIC at the start of the irrigation season and penalties will be assessed for any overages. For those shares held by individuals the overage will be charged directly to the shareholder. Failure to pay assessments or penalties will result in shares being sold to cover amounts due to GIC.
