“Joe at the Podium “
I have been on Capitol Hill since 1971. Recently, with some extra time on my hands, I’ve been tuning into various news channels and hearing from friends across the country, particularly those on the Hill. Since the presidential debate, there has been a chorus from both parties urging President Biden to step down, believing it’s time for him to do so. After a career in public service spanning over 50 years, he is now taking that step. However, now that he is following through, the same individuals who called for his resignation are accusing him of abandoning his responsibilities. Despite agreeing to serve until the next president’s inauguration, he is facing criticism for his decision.
Now we have a qualified Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been well-vetted, accomplished, and deserving to serve the citizens of our country as commander-in-chief; however, she is criticized. She has served the people of California as a prosecutor and even Attorney General.
What I would like to address today is filling the void of bringing us the smoothest transition as well as the most UNITY that will help bring our country together. I have seen the choices we have for the office of vice president within the Democratic party such as: governors, senators, congressmen, even cabinet members. All I’m sure are very well qualified; however, together they don't bring the package necessary in my opinion to not only serve in the position of vice president, but also help move our country forward at this most dangerous and critical time.
What we need more than anything, is UNITY among our legitimate political factions. Allow me, a mere individual with an opinion, to place the name of Senator Mitt Romney before you as the running mate of the presumed Democratic nominee for president. He is a gentleman that has always stepped up when asked to provide public service, whether it be to the United States Olympic committee, or the people of Massachusetts and Utah. He has never allowed himself to be compromised and has been outspoken when he felt he was right and it was good for all people, not just his party, but all people.
If we are sincere about UNITY and we are truly the UNITED States, we will look forward, not to the past, to a future when we can look beyond the political parties of the candidates. We should look at the individual and what they can do for all Americans. I offer this as food for thought and a suggestion to nourish not only our minds and our families, but also our spirit that we are the UNITED States of America.
May God bless all of us!
Joe
