Roadtrips are the best trips. Even when five of you and all the things you need for a two month trip are packed like sardines in Europe’s version of an “economy” car with a tiny hatchback trunk and the two teens are bringing their worst. Because there’s still an audiobook to listen to (currently listening to Red Rising as a family), never ending river canyons to traipse through, and another lake to jump in around the corner.

Traveling is the ultimate example of “learning through experience”. Not only do you learn about people and places, languages and customs, but through the lens of each new perspective, you learn about yourself. Then the teens start bickering again and you wonder why you’re doing it at all. Kidding. But can someone please make them stop?

We blinked, and almost a year passed by 🫣. Hello again, we’re alive! We’re traveling through Greece + the Balkans for two months, taking it slow and prioritizing the simplicity of day to day local life over grand adventure.

Our ever trusty Atlas 16 is with us in its natural traveling habitat and has been enjoying a mix of sandy beaches and cobblestone villages, enduring all the things a 9 year old does to put their bag through the wringer.

We adventure to slow down. We’ve been traveling for 6 weeks, but it feels more like 60. Life has felt both full of adventure, and slow. And that’s exactly why we’ve prioritized summer-long travel since settling into the routine of public school and organized sports 5 years ago. Busyness speeds life up. Months pass in what feels like days. School starts, before you know it it’s winter break, then by some time warp phenomenon, it’s summer again. Life is full, but it’s also fast. We only have 3 summers left before our oldest is 18 and I can just feel the clock ticking.

I’m just so grateful that we’re able to do this as a family. It’s not without its challenges with both parents working the entire trip - but we find that even with the time commitment of work, not having organized sports and social activities gives us so much extra space.

The wide horizon travel has gifted us all is immeasurable and I just can’t wait (only as a matter of speech) to see it continue to manifest in the lives of these three not-so-little humans sandwiching me.

A drizzly morning makes for the best adventure.

Built by African slave labor in the 16th century, Castillo San Felipe has a storied history. Used as a primary defense against invading nations keen on exploiting the mining bounty in Colombia and the surrounding region, the castle became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

I have such mixed emotions when it comes to colonial relics such as this. It feels important to learn about the history - how colonizers shaped entire continents to their likeness, decimating indigenous populations in the process - and at the same time, not sure you want to financially support their preservation. As with all things, it’s complex, and the best solution is to learn about the issue from all sides, expanding our perspectives - and our capacity for understanding humanity in all its shapes, colors, and sizes.
