Craft farmers moving forward!!
As the industry is hitting grim realities of commodification there is some hope. It's inspiring to hear Mendocino's small cannabis farmers beginning to utilize the tools that small farmers of every type have leveraged to carve out their own niche.

Direct to consumer platforms, however they can be managed, at this time are critically important to the craft industry. Although this is a work around to satisfy current burdensome CA regulations, it is a way for farmers to pocket more of their hard earned dollars.

Also, high on the list of bills worth following is AB 2691 "Temporary cultivator event retail license" by Assembly Member Woods.

Members of the Mendocino Cannabis Alliance, who have struggled to thrive in California’s regulated adult-use marketplace, have come together to launch an online sales and delivery platform.

I stand with the independent, legacy cannabis businesses of California. Do you?

If you do, now's the time to walk your talk. The California Budget Act of 2021: Department of Cannabis Control Trailer Bill passed by a vote of the Legislature on July 1st, 2021.

However, the measure has not yet been signed into law by the Governor, and the Legislature is working on a clean up trailer bill expected to be before the Legislature on:
Thursday July 15th for a vote.

There are several critical amendments related to the provisional licensing program that are URGENTLY NEEDED to protect small independently owned and operated cannabis businesses in California.

Please sign this letter and ask your state representative to support small, independently owned and operated cannabis businesses in California. (Your address finds your representatives).

In our culture it's easy to get caught up with the idea that "more" and "bigger" is better. When truly "better is better."

Right now the market is not very discerning, but hopefully there's craft farmers out there holding on to their special but maybe not so high THC testing strains for when real appreciation of the plant evolves.

Do high THC numbers matter? Only for sales: as researchers recently found, more THC doesn't necessarily get you more high.

The long silence is broken! Cultivators stand with one voice! Give us terroir based appellations.

As someone involved in statewide advocacy during the initial height of cannabis regulations (2014-18) it's been disheartening to notice how little representation that small independents cannabis businesses have had of late.

However, that all changed last week during CDFA Appellation of Origin public hearing regarding the new regulations. Origins Council spearheaded a superb, well researched, and deliberate set of recommendations backed by the Regional Council representing the renown legacy cannabis producing areas of California including: the Humboldt County Growers Alliance, the Mendocino Cannabis Alliance, the Nevada County Cannabis Alliance, the Big Sur Farmers Association, the Trinity County Agricultural Alliance, and the Sonoma County Growers Alliance.

In addition, the broader coalition of organizations included in supporting the recommendations were: Cannabis Distribution Association (CDA), California NORML, the United Cannabis Business Association (UCBA), the International Cannabis Farmers Association (ICFA), California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA), Sonoma Valley Cannabis Enthusiasts, and the Cannabis Business Association of Sonoma (CBASC).

The first-of-its-kind Cannabis Appellation Program will allow for place-of-origin branding. At the final public hearing this week, growers emphasized the importance of “terroir” baseline standards.

A straightforward piece from Casey O'Neill, Mendocino multi-generational farmer, passionate advocate, amazing wordsmith, and inspiring farmer. It was great to work on the board of CGA with you. Hopefully, they'll get it right at some point.

Casey O’Neill of HappyDay Farms has spent years fighting for small farmers, but with California cannabis regulations tightening, he asks, “For what?"

These are the most important set of regulations that will define the success or failure of craft cannabis.

For the best information follow Origins Council (previously Mendocino Appellations Project and CalGrowers Appellations Committee) who originally initiated and continue to advocate for this legislation.

We are pleased to announce the release of the proposed regulations for the appellations of origin for cannabis. The release of these regulations marks the official start of a 45-day public comment period provided under California law. All interested parties are encouraged to submit comments about the proposed regulations. For more information, please visit our Cannabis Appellations Program webpage: cdfa.ca.gov/calcannabis/appellations.html. Thank you.
