Okii, my name is Jordan. I am an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne and a descendant of the Amskapi Pikani (Southern Blackfeet). Raised in Browning, Montana, by my mother and grandmother, I was taught the profound value of higher education at a young age. This foundational upbringing, combined with the vital support of the Montana United Indian Association (MUIA), guided me to successfully complete my Bachelor of Science in Public Health.
My path to this degree has been defined by persistence, and MUIA has been a cornerstone of that journey. By helping me secure essential textbooks and critical educational resources, they removed barriers that allowed me to focus on achieving my academic goals. Navigating higher education as a first-generation college student comes with unique challenges, and I want to give a special shout-out to Rochelle, my point person at MUIA. She was a major source of motivation and guidance every step of the way, keeping me grounded and driven.
To me, a servant leader is one who prioritizes the collective needs of the community and works directly on the front lines to achieve shared goals. The hands-on dedication of Rochelle and the MUIA team exemplifies this exact kind of leadership, and their investment in my education has empowered me to carry this philosophy forward.
As I continue my academic journey at the graduate level toward a Master’s degree, I am incredibly grateful for MUIA’s continued support. With their ongoing partnership, I aim to bridge the gap between public health science and administrative action, developing the high-level organizational and policy expertise required to effectively lead and elevate tribal health systems.
