Acheiving a total Lean transfomation from scratch can be very intimidating. Most companies will not attempt it! Instead, they choose target areas within the current operating system and begin there. Once successful in the targeted area, they then have new confidence to move on to another area. The fundamental definition of Lean manufaturing is acheiving maximum efficiency for each individual process across the sum of the whole manufacting process. Evidence of an inefficient process include high work in process or finished goods inventories, missed ship dates, and quality issues. These resulting consequences can be very expensive for the manufacturer. Are you happy with your inventory levels? Are you satisfied with your fulfillment rate? Are your quality goals being met? Are you a commodity manufacturer with many competitors? If so, your price and delivery parameters are set by the marketplace. Conversion to a Lean operation will have limited benefits for you. If, however, you operate in a very competitive marketplace, selling price and delivery time improvements can provide you with incredible market differentials. Many manufacturers praise the advertised benefits of operating a lean manufacturing facility. But, when it comes down to changing the legacy performance measurements. manufacturers can get weak-kneed very quickly. For example, Inventory as a line item on the balance sheet is usually greatly reduced while cash on hand is increased. Since overhead absorption is based on the amount of inventory on hand. the inventory reduction success can be diluted by the resulting overhead cost increase on the balance sheet. Trying to establish a continuous flow manufacturing line to accomplish your Lean manufacturig goals? A good place to start is to calculate your critical path through manufacturing to establish the minimum time required to produce your product. Of course, this critical path determines your lead time. A common term for this critical path time is Total Product Cycle Time (TPCT). The goal of any Lean initiative is reduce TPCT. What is your TPCT?
