Almost every dollar that flows in and out of a law firm's trust account begins with an email.
That’s the opening fraudsters use. They gain access to accounts, and quietly read through past emails until they understand the processes in place. After that, it’s only a matter of time before they can take advantage of the situation.
The FBI logged 21,442 business email compromise complaints in 2024 with $2.77 billion in reported losses. BakerHostetler found the average fraudulent wire has climbed to $1.26 million, and firms take a median of 18 days to notice.
