Those Days Are Over
by Dave Carver
Cindy Martin Carver

At sixty, I've come to terms with a few things. I look in the mirror, and sometimes I still see that guy in his forties or even thirties—the one who could power through a weekend project, stay up late, and still bounce back like nothing happened. But these days, my body has a way of reminding me that those days are over.

My mind? Well, it hasn't caught up yet. It tells me I can still lift that heavy box, climb that ladder, or run up those stairs without a second thought. It whispers that I can work in the yard all day or tackle a home repair without taking a break. But then, by mid-afternoon, my back is tight, my knees are creaky, and I'm ready for a nap.

It’s not that I’ve lost the drive—far from it. The urge to do things, to push myself, is still there, as strong as ever. But sixty brings a wisdom that younger me didn’t have. I’ve learned that there’s a difference between what I can do and what I should do.

So now, I listen to my body a little more. I’ve traded those marathon yardwork sessions for shorter, more manageable bursts of activity. I take breaks, stretch, and stay hydrated like a pro. I no longer feel the need to prove anything to myself or anyone else. Those days are over, too.

Yet, there's a freedom in this new stage of life. I’m more in tune with what truly matters. I’ve learned to pace myself, enjoy the slower moments, and find joy in simpler things. My body may not move like it used to, but my mind still drives the adventure—just with a little more caution and care.

Devotional on Revelation 14: Endurance and God's Final Judgment
by Dave Carver

Revelation 14:12-13 (NIV) "This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. Then I heard a voice from heaven say, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.’”

Reflection

Revelation 14 offers a powerful vision of God’s ultimate victory, the defeat of evil, and a call to faithful endurance. The chapter paints a vivid picture of two harvests—one of the righteous and one of the wicked. The 144,000 standing with the Lamb symbolize those who have remained loyal to Christ, while the angels’ messages remind us of the coming judgment on those who reject God.

At the core of this passage is a call to endure. As the final judgment approaches, God’s people are urged to remain faithful, trusting in His righteousness even in the face of adversity. The assurance is that their deeds will not go unnoticed, and they will find eternal rest in Him. This speaks volumes to us today, as we navigate a world that often seems filled with turmoil, injustice, and moral compromise.

Comparisons to Real-World Events

Endurance Through Crisis: Think of the endurance shown by people around the world in times of crisis. During natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or pandemics, communities must pull together and persevere through uncertainty and loss. Many of us may feel worn down by the struggles of everyday life—economic pressures, personal challenges, or social division. Yet, Revelation 14 reminds us that, just as those who stood by the sea of glass and sang a song of victory, we are called to hold fast to our faith, knowing that God sees and honors our endurance.

Consider the global COVID-19 pandemic. Many people felt isolated, overwhelmed, and disheartened by the relentless nature of the crisis. However, the perseverance shown by frontline workers, communities, and families, who continued to care for one another, is an inspiring reminder of what it means to endure in difficult times. For Christians, this endurance is not only about survival but about continuing to trust in God’s promises.

Judgment and Justice in the World

The second angel’s message in Revelation 14 declares the fall of “Babylon,” a symbol of the corrupt systems of the world. In our time, we’ve seen the collapse of regimes and institutions that oppress people and deny justice. Whether it’s the fall of authoritarian governments or the exposure of corruption in powerful institutions, the downfall of "Babylon" serves as a reminder that no force can stand against God’s justice forever.

Real-world parallels can be found in events like the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 or the Arab Spring of 2011. These moments marked the collapse of oppressive systems and the beginning of change for many. While human justice is often incomplete, these events echo the promise in Revelation that God’s judgment is final, and His justice will be fully realized.

The Faithful Will Be Rewarded

In the chapter, those who are faithful to God and refuse to worship the beast are rewarded with eternal rest. This reminds us that even when the world seems dark, and evil appears to triumph, God sees our faithfulness. We may not always see the fruit of our faith in this life, but Revelation 14 reassures us that our deeds will follow us, and there is eternal rest for those who remain loyal to Jesus.

In history, we see examples of people who lived sacrificial lives, driven by their faith, even when their actions seemed insignificant at the time. Think of figures like Mother Teresa, who worked tirelessly in the slums of Calcutta, or Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for justice in the face of opposition and danger. They may not have seen all the fruits of their labor in their lifetimes, but their deeds have left lasting legacies, and they now rest in the Lord. The same is true for us—God promises that our faithfulness, though it may seem small or unappreciated in this world, is seen by Him and will be rewarded.

Application

Revelation 14 speaks to believers today, reminding us to endure in the face of trials and temptations. The temptation to compromise, the weight of suffering, and the injustice we see around us can be overwhelming. But this chapter offers hope: the Lamb will ultimately triumph, and those who remain faithful to Him will find rest and reward.

As you go about your day, consider the ways in which you are being called to endure. Maybe it’s persevering through personal struggles, staying faithful to God’s commands in a world that often rejects them, or standing firm in your convictions when it feels easier to give in. Revelation 14 reminds us that endurance is not in vain. The God who sees every act of faithfulness is preparing a harvest, and the reward for those who stay true to Him is eternal rest and peace.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the reminder that You see our endurance. In times of trial, give us strength to remain faithful to You. Help us to trust in Your justice, knowing that You are working all things for good, even when we cannot see it. Give us courage to stand firm, like the 144,000, and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the Lamb who is victorious. Amen.

Spiritual Warfare: Battling the Unseen

By Dave Carver

There’s a battle raging all around us—one that we can’t see with our eyes, but we certainly feel its effects deep within our souls. This is spiritual warfare. It’s a real and often intense conflict that every believer in Christ will face at some point in their walk with Him. But what does it feel like, and how do we combat those overwhelming feelings that come with it?

The Nature of the Battle

Spiritual warfare can manifest itself in different ways. For some, it might feel like an inner restlessness—an unsettled spirit that leaves you feeling anxious or fearful without a clear reason. For others, it might look like a series of setbacks and temptations, trying to pull you away from God. It can be a time when doubts about your faith creep in, or when you feel distant from the Lord even though you are doing everything you can to draw near to Him.

Often, the enemy will strike at our minds. Thoughts of inadequacy, guilt, or shame can creep in, even after we’ve been forgiven by Christ. The accuser tries to remind us of our past, our weaknesses, and our failures, convincing us that we’re not worthy of God’s love. It’s in these moments that spiritual warfare becomes palpable—feeling like a heavy weight pressing down on our hearts and spirits.

The Strength of the Savior

As servants of Christ, how do we shake these feelings? The answer is found in the power and authority of Jesus Christ. We don’t face this battle alone. In fact, the victory has already been won on the cross. But in the midst of the fight, we have to remind ourselves of that truth.

Lean on God's Word: The Bible is our sword in this battle. Just as Jesus resisted the devil’s temptations in the wilderness by quoting Scripture, we too can resist by meditating on God’s promises. Verses like 2 Corinthians 10:4 remind us that the weapons of our warfare are not of this world but have divine power to demolish strongholds. When negative or fearful thoughts arise, combat them with the truth of God’s Word.

Pray Without Ceasing
Prayer is a powerful weapon. In Ephesians 6, Paul urges believers to pray in the Spirit on all occasions. We may not know exactly what to say when we’re feeling overwhelmed, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Sometimes just whispering the name of Jesus is enough to push back the darkness and remind us of who is really in control.

Claim Your Identity in Christ

The enemy’s goal is to distort our perception of who we are. He wants to make us believe that we’re alone, unloved, or defeated. But when we remind ourselves of our identity in Christ—as children of God, redeemed and righteous—we take back the ground the enemy tries to steal. We are not fighting for victory; we are fighting from a place of victory.
Guard Your Heart: Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from it. Be mindful of what you allow into your mind and heart—whether it’s media, conversations, or environments that might give the enemy a foothold. Staying spiritually alert and surrounding yourself with people and influences that encourage your faith is key.

Walking in Victory

Though spiritual warfare can feel intense and disorienting, it’s not permanent. God promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). When we feel the weight of the battle, we must take refuge in the Lord and lean into His strength.

In moments of deep spiritual struggle, it helps to take a step back and reflect on God’s faithfulness. Look back at all the times He has come through for you, even when you couldn’t see a way forward. Remembering His past deliverance can fuel our faith in present trials.

We also need to remember that we’re not alone in this fight. As members of the body of Christ, we’re surrounded by a community of believers who are also fighting their own battles. Encouragement from others, their prayers, and their support can uplift us when our own strength feels depleted. That’s why fellowship is so important.

The Final Word

Spiritual warfare is real, but we serve a God who is far greater than anything the enemy can throw our way. The fight may be fierce at times, but the outcome is assured. When we root ourselves in Christ, wield the Word of God, and remain vigilant in prayer, the enemy has no choice but to flee.

We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37). Keep fighting, keep trusting, and keep looking to Jesus—the author and finisher of our faith. Let His peace guard your heart and mind, and rest in the victory He has already won for you.

“Let’s Talk About Dogs”

Dogs have been known as "man's best friend" for centuries, and their role in our lives goes beyond mere companionship. The ultimate purpose of having a dog as a pet lies in the profound connections they foster through companionship, love, and compassion.

First and foremost, dogs provide unwavering companionship. They are always there to greet us at the door, offering a sense of warmth and loyalty that can brighten even the dullest of days. This bond helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, particularly for those who live alone or face challenges in social interactions.

Moreover, the love of a dog is unparalleled. They possess an innate ability to sense our emotions, offering comfort during tough times and celebrating our joys with unbridled enthusiasm. This mutual affection promotes emotional well-being, encouraging us to express and experience love more freely.

Having a dog in the workplace can also provide several benefits, both for employees and the overall work environment:

Stress Reduction: Studies have shown that interacting with dogs can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), making employees feel more relaxed and happier during the workday.

Increased Productivity: A more relaxed and positive environment often leads to increased productivity. Having a dog can encourage short breaks, which are known to improve focus and creativity when employees return to their tasks.

Improved Morale and Team Bonding: Dogs tend to bring people together, fostering social interaction among colleagues. This can help strengthen team relationships and improve overall workplace morale.

Dogs also teach us valuable lessons in compassion and empathy. Caring for a pet requires responsibility and attentiveness, fostering a nurturing spirit that extends beyond our furry friends. This relationship can enhance our capacity for compassion, making us more understanding and patient individuals.

Ultimately, having a dog enriches our lives in countless ways. From offering companionship and unconditional love to nurturing our capacity for empathy, the presence of a dog can transform our everyday experiences, making them more fulfilling and meaningful. Embracing this bond can lead to a deeper understanding of love and connection in our lives.

Endless Heat: The Upper Midwest's Unyielding Summer
By Dave Carver

As the calendar edges into late summer, the Upper Midwest is grappling with an oppressive, relentless heat that has not only tested our patience but also strained our resilience.

For over 28 days, the region has languished under a scorching sun, with no significant rain in sight. This unrelenting heatwave has plunged many areas into Moderate to Severe drought, casting a shadow of misery and hopelessness over our daily lives.

The impact of this relentless weather on our environment is profound and distressing. Lawns that were once lush and vibrant now resemble arid wastelands, and gardens that bloomed with promise in the spring are now parched and withered. Even the most resilient of plants have succumbed to the intense heat, their leaves curling up in defeat. For those of us who take pride in our green thumbs, this transformation from fertile growth to barren ground feels like a personal defeat.

Farmers, too, are facing an uphill battle. The crops that once held the promise of a bountiful harvest now look more like a lost cause. The extreme heat and prolonged dryness have stunted growth and reduced yields, leaving many to face the bitter reality of a diminished harvest. For those who rely on their crops for income, this summer has been a harsh reminder of the capricious nature of Mother Nature. Despite our best efforts and careful planning, the whims of the weather often seem to render our hard work futile.

The emotional toll of this unyielding summer is palpable. There is a pervasive sense of sadness and frustration as we watch our hard work unravel under the unforgiving sun. The endless days of heat seem to sap not just the moisture from the ground, but also our spirits. In a region that is accustomed to seasonal variations and the occasional tempest, the current drought feels like an unwelcome anomaly, a harsh reminder of how little control we truly have over the forces that shape our environment.

In times like these, it’s easy to feel as though we are battling a losing fight against an indifferent force. Yet, even as we grapple with the heat and its repercussions, there is a quiet resilience that persists. We hold on to hope that rain will eventually come, that cooler temperatures will restore some semblance of balance, and that the hard-earned lessons of this summer will fortify our resolve for the future.

For now, we endure the heat and the accompanying despair, knowing that we are not alone in this struggle. As we wait for relief, our shared experience becomes a testament to the challenges and triumphs that define life in the Upper Midwest. And though the fight against Mother Nature may seem endless, it is also a reminder of our enduring strength and our ability to weather even the harshest of seasons.

I’m asked often - “How do you come up with your columns?” Or “I didn’t know that you could write” ..sadly the latter is because many have never taken the time to get to know me. Anyway here are my thoughts on the creative process …

The Alchemy of Writing: From Thoughts to Words
by Dave Carver

Writing is often viewed as a solitary endeavor, but it is, in essence, an intricate dance of creativity and craftsmanship. The process of transforming abstract thoughts into tangible words is a journey marked by both inspiration and perspiration. It begins in the mind, where raw ideas swirl and coalesce into something vaguely coherent, and it ends in polished prose, refined through meticulous editing.

The creative process starts with the genesis of thought. These initial sparks can arise from a myriad of sources—an observation, a fleeting emotion, or a question that demands exploration. At this stage, thoughts are fluid and formless, existing as potential rather than substance. They are often incomplete and scattered, requiring a great deal of mental organization and clarity to bring them into focus.

Once the core idea begins to solidify, the next step is to translate these thoughts into words. This stage is akin to sculpting; words are the chisel that carves out the narrative from the block of abstract ideas.

Typing or writing them down is a physical manifestation of this mental process, where language starts to shape and give form to the conceptual. Here, the challenge lies in choosing the right words—words that convey the intended meaning and resonate with the reader. Each word must be carefully considered for its nuance and impact, as it contributes to the overall texture of the narrative.

With words assembled into sentences, the task shifts to crafting paragraphs. This is where coherence and flow become crucial. Sentences must connect logically and seamlessly, guiding the reader through the writer’s thought process. Paragraphs should be more than just a collection of sentences; they need to encapsulate a distinct idea or theme while maintaining a smooth transition to the next segment. This structural phase demands an understanding of both the micro (sentence level) and macro (paragraph level) aspects of writing.

Editing is where the real refinement occurs. The first draft is rarely the final product; it is merely a rough sketch of the intended piece. Editing involves scrutinizing every sentence, evaluating word choice, and ensuring clarity. It’s a process of peeling away the extraneous and honing the essential, much like polishing a gemstone. Each revision brings the work closer to its final form, revealing the true brilliance of the initial concept.

In essence, writing is an iterative process that transforms ephemeral thoughts into enduring text. It is a blend of inspiration and discipline, requiring both the creativity to generate ideas and the diligence to refine them. Through each stage—thoughts, words, sentences, paragraphs, and edits—the writer navigates the complexities of language and expression, ultimately crafting a piece that communicates, engages, and endures.

I forgot to post this earlier today…

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
by Dave Carver

Early this morning, as the first light of the day kissed the horizon, I found myself sitting outside, savoring a warm cup of coffee and taking in the stillness around the pond. The fog was lifting, revealing a flock of ducks silently gliding through the air, making their way toward the water for a graceful landing. As I watched, something unusual caught my eye—a Cooper's Hawk tucked among the flock. At the last moment, just before touching down, the hawk broke off and soared into the tallest tree in our yard. Perched on the highest branch, its sharp eyes scanned the world below, patiently waiting, poised, and ready to strike when the opportunity arose.

There’s something profound about watching nature unfold like this, something that speaks to the world we live in. If we pay attention, our natural environment can reveal truths about our human interactions. We don’t always like to admit it, but many of us walk through life as sheep, unaware of the wolves that quietly blend in around us. They often come cloaked in smiles, charm, and easy confidence, luring us into complacency before revealing their true nature.

But there’s no need to fear. Change is coming.

The quiet moments often offer the clearest insights, and today’s dawn carried with it a reminder: a reckoning is on the horizon. The wolves may think they’ve won, but the tides are shifting. Keep watching, keep waiting—just like that hawk. For when the moment comes, you’ll be ready.

The Natural Cycle: A Journey from Growth to Decline
By Dave Carver

In life, everything has its moment of peak vitality—a point where it reaches full protection, flourishing in its environment. This is a universal truth that applies not just to living beings but to all works of nature. From the tallest trees in the forest to the tiniest organisms in the soil, each entity experiences a phase of growth, a period of strength, and eventually, a time of decline.

Nature operates in cycles, and within these cycles, there is a constant ebb and flow. Initially, all things are in a state of gaining. Plants push their roots deeper into the earth, drawing nutrients and water to fuel their upward growth. Animals and humans alike grow stronger, more resilient, and more capable of withstanding the challenges of their environment. This is a time of accumulation—a time when everything is building towards its peak.

However, this peak is not a permanent state. It is the point of full protection, where an entity has reached the zenith of its development and strength. It is in this state that it is most resistant to external threats, most capable of withstanding the forces that seek to destabilize it. But as with all things in nature, this period of full protection is finite. Once this peak is achieved, the cycle begins to shift.
What follows is a period of waning. The forces that once fueled growth and vitality start to diminish. Trees, once full of leaves, begin to shed them in preparation for winter. Animals slow down, their energy reserves depleting as they age. Even the most robust ecosystems eventually experience decline, as resources become scarce or as external pressures mount.

This waning is not a failure but rather a natural progression. It is a reminder that all things must change, that what was once strong and vibrant will eventually give way to something new. It is a process that ensures balance in the natural world, allowing for renewal and regeneration. The death of one cycle makes way for the birth of another, continuing the endless rhythm of nature.

Understanding this cycle is crucial for us as we navigate our lives and the world around us. It teaches us to appreciate the phases of growth, to recognize the importance of reaching our own points of full protection, and to accept the inevitable decline that follows. It is a lesson in humility, reminding us that no matter how strong or secure we may feel, change is always on the horizon.

As we observe the world around us, we can see this cycle in action every day. It is in the changing of the seasons, the rise and fall of empires, and even in our personal lives. By embracing this natural cycle, we can find peace in the knowledge that each phase of life has its purpose, and that in the end, everything returns to where it began, ready to start the journey once more.
