Don't use a hatchet in uncertain economic waters... use a life ring.

I talk to several business leaders and owners each week that tell me they need to cut costs because of their concerns about profitability and sustainability in these uncertain economic times. Instead of using a hatchet to do layoffs and budget freezes, companies can save hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars if they improve employee engagement. In a study done by Gallup and FranklinCovey, they found that $1,800 out of every $10,000 of wages is wasted on disengaged and unproductive workers. When you consider that nearly sixty percent of the workforce is disengaged, it's easy to see the savings that businesses can achieve by increasing levels of employee engagement.

Leaders can use a life ring of empathetic questions and active listening to get below the waterline to learn why employees are disengaged. Building the connections between leaders and their teams increases engagement, and it also builds retention. The high cost of turnover is avoided which saves additional money for the business.

I wake up every morning to help leaders rescue workers that are adrift in a sea of disengagement, while saving their organization's bottom line at the same time. I do that through the services of Full Sail Leadership Academy. I'd love to give you some lessons on throwing life rings.

I've always loved the line "Bring me that horizon" in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". The line sums up how a strong vision of the future can drive a team. To get to our preferred horizon, we must cast off our fears and the comfort of doing things that we have always done because they seem safe. It was such a joy and honor serving the leadership team from Ascension Franklin campus yesterday as we discussed how to keep Teams on Course and the Ten Keys to Individual and Team Performance. The wind velocity and choppy waters that we found after the classroom session could not have been better to reinforce what everyone learned.

It was also a great day of listening to these leaders as well, as they celebrated the success of coming out of their major data attack incident, and hearing the resiliency that they demonstrated.
