"Can trauma, menopause, or chronic illness cause ADHD or autism?"
No.
But they can make ADHD or autistic traits become much more noticeable.
We're whole people. Trauma, hormones, chronic illness, stress, burnout, and nervous system changes can all affect how your brain functions. Sometimes those changes reduce your ability to compensate for traits that have been there all along.
Many adults weren't identified as children because they had:
• strong support systems
• learned ways to compensate or mask
• high intelligence
• fewer life demands
• or both ADHD and autism, which can sometimes obscure one another
As life becomes more complex—or as trauma, menopause, burnout, or chronic health conditions increase the demands on your brain—it can become much harder to compensate. That's often when people begin asking, "Have I been neurodivergent all along?"
That doesn't mean your experiences aren't real.
If you've spent years wondering, "Why does life seem harder for me than it does for everyone else?" you deserve an assessment with someone who will listen without dismissing your concerns.
At Compassionate Voice Counseling, we provide neuro-affirming adult ADHD and autism assessments that look at the whole picture—not just a checklist.
