"A 2023 report from the Exit Planning Institute reveals that a staggering 75% of business owners want to exit their business in the next 10 years, with 49% wanting to exit in the next 5 years.

When asked if they prefer an internal or external transition, 70% of owners prefer an internal option, with a desire for a family transition representing about half of business owners.

What is an internal transition vs. a third-party sale? Why would you choose one over the other? And how do you prepare for the sale of your business?"

Most business owners start their company for freedom. Then, somewhere along the way, they become trapped by the very business they built.

The long hours. The constant pressure. The feeling that everything depends on them.

On a recent episode of Chasing the Insights, Cogent Analytics Founder Rob Braiman joined host Vince Warnock to discuss a challenge nearly every entrepreneur faces: How do you build a successful business without losing sight of the life you're trying to create?

Drawing from his experience working with thousands of small and midsize business owners, Rob shares insights on leadership, growth, delegation, and why true business success isn't just measured by revenue - it's measured by the quality of life it creates.

A stronger business should create more freedom, not more dependency.

If you're working hard to grow your company while trying to maintain balance in the rest of your life, this conversation is worth a listen.

Training vs. Onboarding: Why the difference matters

Many small to mid-sized business owners believe onboarding and training are the same thing. They’re not.

Onboarding helps employees understand the business. Training helps them perform inside it.

Onboarding answers:
- Who are we?
- How do things work?
- What tools do we use?

Training answers:
- How do I improve?
- How do I solve problems better?
- How do I grow in this role?

Strong onboarding helps employees start. Strong training helps them stay effective. Without continued development, even good hires can plateau.

After the first 90 days, how does your business continue helping employees improve? If the answer is unclear, that’s an opportunity.

Your business can only grow as fast as your people do. Let's take both to the next level:

Workforce development services focused on leadership development, employee performance, retention, and long-term talent growth.

"Most business owners know they need to raise prices. They just haven’t done it yet.

If you run a trades or B2B service business, your costs keep climbing while your prices stay flat. It is time to fix that."

Paid vs. Organic Marketing: What business owners should actually focus on

One of the most common marketing questions we hear from small and mid-sized business owners is: “Should we invest in paid marketing or focus on organic growth?”

The answer is usually: Both - but for different reasons.

Organic content builds:
- Credibility
- Familiarity
- Long-term trust

It helps potential customers understand who you are and how you think over time.

Paid campaigns help:
- Increase visibility faster
- Reach targeted audiences
- Support specific growth initiatives

But paid traffic without a strong brand foundation often underperforms.

Organic marketing builds trust. Paid marketing accelerates reach. Businesses that intentionally combine both tend to achieve more stable, sustainable growth.

Ask yourself: If someone discovered our business today, would our marketing create confidence or confusion? That answer matters more than the platform.

Want to take your marketing to the next level? We can help.

Marketing services that strengthen your brand, attract qualified leads, and turn visibility into measurable, repeatable growth.

A family-owned home builder with nearly 50 years of history hit a ceiling that a lot of growing businesses eventually face:

- The business had a strong reputation
- Revenue was solid
- Demand existed

But too much still depended on the owner.

Sales, estimating, design, administration, decision-making - everything flowed through one person. Growth became constrained by bandwidth instead of market opportunity.

After implementing operational controls, pricing systems, leadership structure, CRM accountability, and proactive lead generation, the company achieved:

- Revenue growth from $9.5M to a projected $17.9M
- Gross margin improvement from 19.7% to 24%
- Lead growth from 1–2 qualified opportunities per week to 8–10
- ~$2M in remodel pipeline sales in two quarters
- ~7.7x ROI on total investment

The biggest shift wasn’t just financial. The business became less owner-dependent. That’s the difference between operating a business and carrying one.

Real growth rarely comes from working harder. It comes from building systems that allow the business to perform consistently without everything relying on one person.

"The widely-known definition of insanity – doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results – is a cycle many business owners find themselves trapped in, stuck in meetings to discuss solutions that never seem to be implemented.

The key to breaking free from this cycle and reclaiming your time is a systematic approach: The Structured Improvement Process, which is focused on six actionable steps to ensure the problem gets solved and a solution is implemented by someone who will maintain momentum and accountability."

Growth can expose problems just as fast as it creates opportunity. For Classic Granite and Marble, rapid expansion brought:

- High turnover
- Lack of training and onboarding
- No forecasting or KPI visibility
- Departments operating without structure
- Leadership stretched too thin

They weren’t struggling because demand was low. They were struggling because the business had outgrown the systems supporting it.

You can’t scale sustainably when critical knowledge lives in a few people’s heads. Eventually, stress rises, communication breaks down, and profitability suffers.

The turning point came when they stopped relying on people-dependent operations and started building system-dependent processes.

The result? Lower turnover, stronger morale, improved profitability, and more freedom for leadership to focus on growth instead of constant firefighting.

Many small to mid-sized business owners assume digital visibility is mostly about marketing.

It’s not. It’s about trust.

Today, potential customers often form opinions about a business before ever making contact — through search results, websites, reviews, content, and social presence.

At Cogent Analytics, we regularly see strong businesses struggle with growth simply because their digital presence doesn’t reflect the quality of the company behind it.

Visibility matters more than ever. Buyers research independently; most customers gather information long before speaking with a salesperson.

Silence creates uncertainty; an outdated or inconsistent online presence can make even a strong business appear inactive or behind the curve.

Visibility compounds over time. Consistent digital presence builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust.

The bigger shift: Digital visibility isn’t just about “being online.” It’s about making it easier for the right people to:
- Understand what you do
- Trust your expertise
- Remember your business when timing matters

Search for your business the same way a customer would. What impression does your digital presence create in the first 60 seconds?

We can help make your digital presence count. Let's talk:

Thank you for reaching out to us at Cogent Analytics. We look forward to helping you maximize ROI and enhance your quality of life.

"What does it mean to you to scale your company?

Scaling can take on different meanings depending on who you ask and what their goals are. You may hear responses like, “I think scaling is growing the company’s revenue faster.”

As you can imagine, that could mean taking yearly revenue from $1.4 million to $1.8 million. To some, that is not truly “scaling your company.""
