Boundaries get talked about as one skill. There are six kinds, and people usually set the easy ones and leave the ones causing the actual problem completely open.

Time boundaries are when you're available and when you're not. The easiest to set and the first to erode.

Conversation boundaries are what you will and won't discuss. With a parent, an in law, a colleague. You don't owe a reason.

Emotional boundaries are about whose feelings you're responsible for. You can care about someone's mood without it becoming your job to fix it.

Energy boundaries are how much you'll carry for someone. This is the one that collapses quietly, because each individual instance is reasonable.

Information boundaries are what's yours to tell. Including what you share about your own relationship with friends and family, which most couples have never once discussed.

Repair boundaries are what has to happen before things go back to normal after something goes wrong. Almost nobody sets these and they're the ones that prevent repeats.

If you've set boundaries and still feel overrun, check whether you've been setting time boundaries at a problem that's actually about energy or repair.

A boundary you don't enforce is a preference.
