Rodents often leave dark, oily streaks along:

Foundation walls
Floor joists and sill plates
Pipes and ductwork
Insulation edges
Frequently used entry/exit routes

The marks are caused by oils and dirt from the rodent's fur rubbing against surfaces. They can be useful for identifying active travel routes and potential entry points.

These marks are called sebum.

**Reminder:** If your HVAC floor registers are rusting, it's often a sign of excessive moisture in your home—not necessarily a problem with your HVAC system.

In many cases, rusted registers indicate indoor humidity levels that consistently exceed **60%**. The source is frequently a damp crawl space or basement, where excess moisture is allowed to migrate into the living area.

Common causes include:

* A missing or damaged moisture barrier
* The need for a properly sized crawl space or basement dehumidifier
* Poor drainage around the foundation allowing water to accumulate

Ignoring high humidity can lead to wood rot, mold growth, musty odors, and even structural damage over time.

If you notice rust on your HVAC registers, it's worth having your crawl space or basement inspected to identify and correct the source of the moisture before more serious problems develop.

Well, here again is proof.

In other news, spray foam insulation does not prevent animals from getting into your home, whether it be open or closed cell.

Vinyl ridge caps on shingle roofs are often prime entry points for bats. Even though we have building codes in place, this is a critical item that can be an issue due to the way it is installed.

We see this issue frequently on brand new roofs. It seems the steeper the pitch, the more the ridge vent tends to lift.

Another issue with this type of ridge vent is it is secured with nails. The nails often back out or which can create lift.

One solution we have found is to install Ridge Guard over it or have a roofer correct it. Call us if you experience this issue and need consultation.
