With all of the changes that everyone has gone through the last year, especially business owners, even though there are many challenges there also may be new opportunities. Think outside of the box. What can you offer that you are not offering now? What types of new services or a new way of providing those services that people or other businesses are interested in? Are their new events or in-person networking groups that you can join? Maybe it is time to create a new business card or Capabilities Statement and update your Marketing Strategy Plan.

As business owners it is important to diversify our business into other markets. But research needs to be accomplished when exploring other markets to make sure that there really is the potential for opportunity. Adding additional markets just to show that your company is diversified without research that supports that there is real opportunity in that market can be expensive. We need to make sure that we have the expertise to function in that new market. It is very hard to build a good reputation, but it is very easy to lose it, if performance in that new market is substandard.

Read a book from your favorite author, listen to a podcast on a topic that you are interested in or one that you want to know more about. We should surround ourselves with people that inspire and challenge us, whether that is a favorite author, speaker, community leader, etc.

During this long period of COVID when our main connection with people was via zoom, it might feel strange to finally attend "in-person" events. This is the perfect time to update that elevator pitch. Has your business explored other markets, gained any certifications, or expertise? Now is the time to really define what your company is and how to get the word out about it. Start looking for networking events that will allow you to meet other business owners so that you can tell them about your company and learn more about theirs. What conferences are coming up? How current are your marketing materials? Do you have a current Capabilities Statement? There are so many new opportunities out there, it is time to get your company positioned to take advantage of them.

There is a big difference. Now is a great time to dust off that Business Plan you put on the shelf years ago. This is a living document not a one and done. Go back and update where your market is today, what is your pricing strategy today and how accurate is that strategy any more? Post covid will continue to present challenges but it will also present opportunities. How prepared are you to capitalize on those opportunities?

But with those obstacles also come opportunities. This is a great time to put your thinking cap on and look for new services that your company might be able to provide or new ways to provide those services. What additional training or certifications can you and you obtain to make your company more competitive? What other markets can you sell to that you haven't explored before? This is truly a good time to bridge those goals with accomplishment.

As a business owner trying to work through the challenges that the Pandemic has put into our path, it is easy to get discouraged. Having a positive perspective allows you to put your thinking cap on, explore new ideas, ask for input from your employees about what new markets to explore, what type of service that you could provide that there is a sudden need for, etc There are untapped opportunities out there, you just need step outside of the comfort one to find them.
