If the word on this mug were a pill that slashed cortisol by 23% and boosted productivity by 31%, it would be the most expensive drug on the market.
While most people use caffeine to survive the morning, the highest-performing physicians and leaders use gratitude to prime their brain power.
It sounds like a "soft" sentiment, but the data is clear: our brains are hardwired to perform better when in a positive state before the work starts.
I saw this play out with a physician I’ll call Dr. David.
Every morning, he walked into the hospital "braced for impact." He was mentally scanning for what would go wrong: staff dropping the ball, Epic glitches, and dreadful interactions.
He wasn’t being negative; he was being vigilant.
But by 2:00 PM, that vigilance became a lead weight. He was on edge, irritable, and hit with decision fatigue. His nervous system was stuck in "Protection Mode."
The Science of the "Limbic Hijack": When we operate in protection mode, the amygdala triggers a hijack. This down-regulates the prefrontal cortex (PFC)—our problem-solving center. We literally lose access to the tools we need for complex leadership and clinical reasoning.
The Change: We adjusted his "Pre-Game" to optimize his neurochemistry. Before work, he named 3 specific things that were working.
Not a generic "my family" answer, but specific anchors:
"The way the charge nurse handled that crisis yesterday."
"The fact that the coffee machine actually worked today."
The shift was palpable. He became sharper. He stayed calm in stressful situations. He navigated clinic more quickly and his patients were happier—even though he spent less time with them.
By anchoring in gratitude, Dr. David was flipping a biological "off-switch" for the amygdala, unlocking the PFC for its best work: complex surgery and rapid decision-making.
Gratitude didn't fix the hospital's problems, but it gave him a better Operating System to solve them.
The Practice: Tomorrow, before work, ask yourself: “What are 3 specific things I am grateful for?”
Watch your performance skyrocket.
