Stomping Grounds full of perks

There’s coffee of course, and plenty of food options, but the biggest perk of Stomping Grounds Coffee House and Wine Bar is the ability to sit a while and soak in all that is good about Greer.
From day one, proprietor Lisa Garland has wanted that for her shop.
“I wanted to have a place where people felt comfortable,” she said. “That’s the main objective. I think I’ve been successful with that because that’s the feedback I get.”
Stomping Grounds, 208 Trade St., is open seven days a week and offers a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu as well as specialty coffees, beer, wine, pastries, and ice cream. Whether entering through the front or back entrance, Garland wants customers to linger.
“People feel guilty because they’ve spent so much time here, but that’s the point. That’s what we’re here for, for you to get comfy and spend all the time you need here,” she said.
Garland is happy knowing a network of relationships exist because of her coffee shop.
“Seeing that literal friendships are being built here because we exist is probably the biggest satisfaction of being open,” Garland said. She also credits her great staff for creating the inviting atmosphere that people associate with Stomping Grounds. Husband Grey Garland, chief dishwasher and head of security, works side-by-side with her as well.
The coffee shop opened in 2012 at the height of the recession. The sixth anniversary of Stomping Grounds passed without fanfare in January. Garland didn’t miss it, she just decided that the next big milestone celebration should be for their 10th anniversary.
“I took a big gamble on this town because 50 percent of all the businesses were closed up and abandoned then,” she said. “I joined a core group of pioneers in downtown Greer and Greer has not let me down. I hope Greer continues to grow in a positive way.”
Live music, including open mic nights, are part of the culture of the shop. Garland, who loves all genres, said that hearing live music while she works is also one of the perks.
Garland is heavily involved with events in Greer and one of her best-selling items is a result of her manning a booth at the Greater Greer Chamber’s Family Fest. She sold Greek gyros strictly for the event, but later added it to the menu because of so many requests for it.
The Cliff Panini is also a big seller. The sandwich is named for former Greer resident and Stomping Grounds regular Cliff Harpst, a WWII veteran who claimed the shop as his living room. He recently moved near family in Ohio.
“We still feel the absence of Cliff on a daily basis,” Garland said. “Every once in a while I still expect him to come around the corner and grab his mug.”
Regular and special events happen nightly at Stomping Grounds. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or sign up for the newsletter at stompinggroundsgreer.com for more information.
