Today, OSHA announced that it is extending the compliance dates with its update to the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) final rulemaking. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors were required to evaluate certain substances by January 19, 2026, but that deadline is now May 19, 2026.
The final rule updates HCS to align with the latest revision of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System (GHS) published on May 20, 2024, with effect on July 19, 2024. It will also improve alignment with other federal agencies and Canada.
The HCS update increases worker protection by improving the information on the labels and safety data sheets (SDS) for hazardous chemicals.
Employers will have to update their Hazard Communication Standard policies and programs to align with the latest revision. Regulatory enforcement will follow soon after.

Whether your organization had any recordable or reportable injuries, or went injury-free, injury and illness data must be submitted to OSHA as of today January 2. Ensure your OSHA 301s (Injuries & Illness Report) and OSHA 300s (Log of Work-related Injuries & Illnesses) are completed correctly so your OSHA 300A (Summary of Work-related Injuries & Illnesses) is accurately recorded. Use OSHA's Injury Tracking Application (ITA) below to submit your data:
