The most common cut protection mistake in industrial environments is not buying too little protection.
It is buying the wrong protection for the specific job.
Cut resistance ratings are not a quality spectrum. A9 is not better than A4. They are specifications matched to specific hazard profiles, and the wrong match creates its own problems.
A4 is the baseline for sheet metal fabrication and most structured manufacturing assembly -- contact with cut or stamped material at controlled angles.
A6 covers wire, cable, and rebar work. The hazard is thin, flexible, and contacts the hand from angles that are not predictable. The higher threshold matters here.
A9 exists specifically for glass handling and automotive stamping. Those environments produce cut events that lower ratings cannot stop, which is why the classification was written for them.
The problem with putting an A9 glove on a worker doing general sheet metal work is not over-protection. It is reduced dexterity and reduced compliance. Workers pull off gloves that fight the job. A glove that is off the hand does not protect anything.
Match the level to the hazard. That is the entire point of the ANSI classification system.
