"This week, I was privileged to coach a new leader with relatively little leadership background. I did not want to smother him with decades of my experiences, thousands of ideas, and oodles of suggestions. So, I suggested three simple things:
First, being a leader is less what you know and do, but about how you help others know and do what they need for their success. Use your power to empower others and your strengths to strengthen others.
Second, frequently ask the question, “what do you think?” to engage others. Listen to others so that when you make final decisions, they feel like they have been heard.
Third, recognize and accept your personal leadership style. Be comfortable with yourself as you discover your unique way to lead based on your values, passions, and strengths that will show up in how you set direction, get things done, and treat others."
What other simple tidbits might you suggest to the new leader without smothering him?
